Chapter 26

They locked eyes in a battle of will. Their unspoken argument played out in their silent gaze.

“Do it.”

Both John and Nick’s heads jerked, spinning toward the hoarse whisper.

“Go ahead and do it so we can get the hell out of here.”

Nick crawled to Dean’s side. Dean groaned, his head moving restlessly, and Nick patted his shoulder. “Easy now.”

Dean coughed, his body tensing with the jarring movement. “I can’t. It hurts. It hurts bad.”

“Dean…” John wrapped his fingers around Dean’s. “We can figure this out.”

“No, Boss. You can’t.” Dean tightened his grip on John’s hand. “I’m scared shitless, but I’m tired of your singing and damned if I’ll listen to the two of you any longer.”

John’s eyes filled with what Nick could only call hopeless defeat.

“Have you ever done anything like this before?” John questioned Nick. His need for reassurance obvious.

How was Nick supposed to answer that? Before he could try Dean offered up the final word.
