Chapter 54

“Wade wasn’t present at that meeting, so how in the hell am I remembering it?”

“Yeah, but think about what Wade Raleigh must have experienced when he returned to the area in 1876. If Percy, the bookkeeper, was still around, he surely would have been in touch with him,” Carlton said.

“That’s one explanation,” Eric said, “and I’ve just thought of another.”

“Explain,” Carlton said.

“You know I read a lot of novels in the fantasy slash science-fiction category, right?”

“One of them, and don’t ask me which one at the moment, involved the use of magic, and one of the characters said something to the effect that memories get sucked into brick and stone over time, and you can feel them if you have magic.”

“That’s nonsense,” Carlton said.

“Is it?” Eric said. “It sort of makes sense, doesn’t it?”

“I like my explanation better,” Carlton said.

“We seem to be on a roll right now,” Eric said. “So why don’t we go out to the garage and see what else we can learn?”
