“If that event took place in January of 1861, and I’ve no doubt that it did,” Eric said. “It would have been stale news in a very short time.”

“Why?” Lydia said.

“Because the Civil War started in April of that year, and news of the war would have overshadowed any other news at the time,” Eric said.

Would anyone like a glass of wine?” Carlton said. “I’ve got a really nice Burgundy decanted and waiting.”

“That sounds like a very good idea,” Miklos said.

“Make that two of us,” Lydia said.

They were in the family room, and it didn’t take Carlton long to fill four wineglasses.

As they sipped their wine, Eric said, “I wonder what kind of sex life Wade and Moses could have had after they were castrated.”

“They could have had a fairly satisfying one,” Miklos said. “Their bodies might not have been producing testosterone after the castration, but hormones don’t cause erections.”

“They don’t?” Eric said.
