Chapter 71

“I don’t think so, but we can drive by there on the way to Hawthorne and have a look.”

“You’ve done a lot of extra cooking, so why don’t I treat you to a light supper at the diner?” Carlton said.

“You talked me into it.”

There was no FedEx collection box in front of the local Post Office, so they drove to Hawthorne, dropped the overnight letter in the box there, then returned to Archer and stopped at the diner. Carlton and Eric both chose that night’s special of barbecued pork with two vegetables.

“What’s next on your agenda?” Eric said between bites of the pork.

“As you know, we took a look at the extra warm spring weather, and the long-range forecast, and planted watermelons about ten days earlier than anyone else. And, with all the rainfall we’ve had, there’s a bumper crop ready to be harvested, starting next week.”

“So, it’s time for Rusty to round up some extra crews, isn’t it?” Eric said.
