Chapter 75

“Excuse me,” Carlton said, and left the room.

The conversation had moved on to another topic when Carlton returned with a book in his hand. He handed the book to Mrs. Barnett.

“That looks like my book,” Eric said.

“That’s exactly what it is,” Carlton said. “I know you well enough to know that you’d never blow your own horn, so to speak, and I put a couple of copies in my bag. This copy is for the Barnett family, and I’ve got another copy that I’ll ask them to give to Lydia, next time they see her.”

Mrs. Barnett was looking at the blurb on the back cover of the book. “This certainly sounds interesting,” she said.

“I don’t think it will quite put you to sleep,” Eric said.

“Eric!” Carlton said. “Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve made the somewhat tragic story of Winfield Raleigh and his family sound quite interesting.”

“Modesty forbids me from responding to that,” Eric said.
