Chapter 18

The corner of Grant’s lips lifted in an almost smile, but the weight of his thoughts proved too heavy and the small curve settled back into a compressed line. “I don’t know, it’s just not working. I haven’t met anyone I liked, much less want to spend more time with. I’m beginning to think that I’m not going to.” Grant folded his hands together and stared down at the hollow in the middle. Yeah, that matched his mood, a giant sucking downward spiral.

“You’re being defeatist.” David pushed his glasses up his nose and leaned forward, his hands waving as he delivered the strangest pep talk Grant had ever received. “Whatever happened to going for the W? Quacking at the principal? Waterfowl never say die?”

“Are you really misquoting a kid’s movie?” Grant jerked his head up and glared at David. Normally he had no problem taking a joke, but deliberately mocking his pain? Not cool.

“It’s the only sports movie I’ve ever watched. I’m trying to be relevant and sensitive to your needs.”
