Scott began slapping my shoulder, which made me grin even harder. “I’m so happy picking on meimproves your mood,” There was no bite in his comment, though, and his slaps morphed into playful shoves.

Min and Gran came up behind us.

“Oh, good, you’re not moping anymore. Tell us why you were crying.”

“Min, I’m not—”

“He’s fallen for Jeremy,” Scott blurted.

“BITCH!” It was my turn to be catty.

“That’s fair turnaround, Theo,” he argued, “and Min was gonna find out anyways. Why delay?” He stuck out his tongue, then danced back a few steps when I swiped at him.

“Fallen for Jer?” Mindy exclaimed.

“Is that the ginger boy?” Gran asked. “Oh, he’s conflicted, that one.”

“What do you mean?” Min asked.

“He spent the entire meal looking anywhere but at my grandson.”

“You think he’s gay?”

“No,” I said, “Scott and I are gay, Mindy. But maybe Jer’s…bi?”

“All these labels you young folk cling to…why can’t you just be in love?”
