“Well,” she said. “If we had it on, we’d know.”

“Know what?”

“About the Goddamn fire.”

She snapped open her purse.

He switched on the radio.

She snapped her purse shut and gave him a triumphant smile.

A Beatles song from the late sixties, “Your Mother Should Know,” played on the radio.

“One of our favorites when you were in college,” she said. “Remember?” She tapped out the rhythm on her purse and sang along.

Philip reached over and switched the radio off mid-song.

‘”Now why did you do that? Couldn’t you see—”
