I was about to leave the canteen when Kayla sat down on the chair facing me. "Hi, baby." She greets me sweetly as if everything was fine and she was just stopping by to say hi, seriously, I snort, as if my day couldn't get any more complicated, she had to show up. "What are you doing here?" I ask angrily narrowing my eyes at her. "I had an appointment and….I miss you, baby, I just wanted to see you." She said softly. "You're the last person I want to see right now Kayla." I snort in disgust.
I got up to leave but she grabbed my wrist. "Please baby, I just want to talk, please." I pull my hand away from her and glared down at her. "I've nothing to say to you." I turns and walks away but she ran in front of me.
"All you've to do is listen for just five minutes, baby please, I meant what I said in my messages that I left on your phone. I can't do this without you, this child, and I need you, if you abandon us, I don't think this child will be born healthy"
"Really? You really expect me to believe that you would actually hurt yourself, please you're too damn selfish for that." I snort and fold my hands across my chest and fixed her with a cold stare. "It wouldn't be intentional of course but look what happened the last you left me and went to Japan?" She said without looking at me.
"Yeah biggest mistake of my life, you had a miscarriage and neglect to tell me about it, maybe because it wasn't mine and maybe the father was right there beside you, I hope you and him had a good laugh about that," I said in a nasty sarcastic tone.
"Baby please, don't be like that, you didn't call off the wedding did you?" She asks in a panic tone. "I think that goes without saying don't you think." I snort again. "Well, you were thinking about postponing it at one point so I guess you finally found the excuse you were looking for." She said biting her lips.
"Bloody hell, how did you know I was thinking about that?" I demand as she swayed but grabbed a chair for support. Instinctively my hands went around her waist holding her up.
"Are you alright?" I ask with concern. "I've just lost the most important person in my life, Ty, how could I possibly be okay." She asks crying. "Have you eaten anything since this morning?" I ask helping her into a chair. "Um...not much." She mumbles. "Alright hold on." I went over to the canteen and order a cup of tea and a sandwich which I took back to her. "Eat this," I ordered and went back to the canteen again.
A few minutes later I came back with a large box lunch and an orange juice. "I can't live without you Ty, please don't let this baby suffer for my mistakes."
"How exactly did you know I was thinking about postponing the wedding?" I ask. "I didn't, I just assume you were since you canceled it so fast." She said biting into the sandwich.
"Well seeing as though you got away with cheating on me for over three years, I can see why you would be under the impression that I'm an idiot but I can assure you, I'm not and the only reason you got away with that for so long is because I trusted you, now quit bull shitting me and answer the damn question. I demand again.
"Baby I didn't, I jus…." "Stop," I said holding up my palm. "Answer the damn question," I said through gritted teeth. "Susan told me." She grumbles with her head down. "How did she know?" I ask. "Martin told her." She said. "How did he know?" I ask again through gritted teeth trying to control my temper.
"He heard Jessica and Jason talking about it but baby I ….." "don't." I sneered at her. "Let me guess, the night I came home and you had suddenly turned into the girlfriend of the year that was the same day you found out wasn't it?" I ask.
"Baby I…" "Wasn't it?" I sneered coldly cutting off what she was about to say. "Yes, but it wasn't an act, that was me being the woman you deserve because I love you." She sobs. My phone beep and I checked it. "I've to go, will you be okay getting home," I ask rubbing my temple. "Well I have no money because you canceled my credit cards which I think is so cruel because I need them to survive and the little arrow thingy that you said tell me how much gas I have is almost on E, so that means I'm almost out of gas but please Ty, please don't punish me like this." She cried.
For a moment I couldn't move or speak, her beauty was captivating, and the way her bottom lip trembled whenever she cried pulled at my heartstrings every time. Before I could stop myself I had my wallet in my hands and I was handing her five thousand dollars. She looked up at me with her famous puppy dog eyes and gave me a weak smile. Thank you, baby." She whispers. "I've to get back to work," I said walking away from her.
"Wait, you didn't ask about the baby." She said massaging her belly. That stop me cold in my tracks and I turn and look at her and my eyes went straight to her belly which was still barely visible seeing as though she was in her third month of pregnancy.
"Well, what did the doctor say?" I asked holding my breath. "All good news, we're both healthy and with your help, we'll remain that way." She said with a smile. "Good, and if you know what's good for you, you will protect that child with your life," I said coldly and walk away from her.
At six Caleb walks into his living room where four of his cousins were waiting for him, each with a drink in their hands. "Hey guys, how's it hanging?" He asks as he drops his bag on the floor. "Sideways," Chad said grabbing the front of his pants.
"Fair enough, now I'm guessing the others have filled you all in on Ty's situation?" Caleb asks flopping down on the big black circular sofa that could easily fit about twelve people. "Yeah, they have." Kevin answer. "How is he?" Christian ask.
Now where most of his cousins were as muscular and scary as hell Christian was different. He was short with shoulder-length black curly hair, small in body, and had a soft voice and from behind he actually looks like a girl, so we all call him half pint because he was short.
"Not good at all, half-pint but we are keeping a very close eye on him, Marcus has actually been checking up on him throughout today, without him knowing of course," Caleb said running his hands over his face.
"Should we be worried?' Kevin asks. "Well, it's Ty so yeah, he doesn't handle things like this well and we almost lost him the last time so there's that but at the moment he's a little distracted with the girl that saved him and her baby." "He does love babies, so let's hope they're enough to keep him from thinking about his problems for a while," Chad said in a hopeful tone.
"Yeah we're all hoping that but the other reason I wanted to see you guys was that he's still hoping that the child that bitch is carrying is his and if that's the case then I need someone to keep an eye on her and it has to be one of us," Caleb said.
"No problem man I would be happy to be the one to bury that bitch." Kevin said with an evil smile. "Hey, I said to watch her, not kill her, well, at least not yet, not while she could still be carrying Ty's child," Caleb said.
"How about not at all guys, come on, what she did was very messed up but it doesn't justify taking her life, nothing justified taking a life," Marcus said. "Alright watch her I will." Kevin snorts. "Without been seen," Caleb warned. "Have we met?" Kevin asks with his brow arched.
"Alright, that settles that, now let's hit the road boys!" Caleb said dancing towards the door. "Dude you literally just got here." Kevin said shaking his head. "And now I'm going out again, got a problem with that?" "Not at all," Kevin said laughing.
"I Can't, I have a date," Christian said biting his lips. "Wait, let me guess, she's taller than you isn't she?" Caleb asks laughing. "Yes," Christian said smiling. "That's not a problem?" Chad asks. "Nope." "Alright Christian! Go get her man." Caleb said slapping him on the back.
It was eight pm when I arrived home that night. I greet my mom and sister who were in the kitchen making loads of cupcakes, my sister then runs over to me and hug me tightly. "How are you doing son?" Mom asks hugging me too. They were both covered in cupcake ingredients but I didn't really care.
"To be honest mom, I really don't know, I feel numb all over and I would do anything not to feel the way I do right now. I'm going to take a shower and go visit Janice and Faith." I said turning to leave. "Wait, have you eaten?" My sister asks. "I couldn't even if I wanted to," I said over my shoulder.
"Um wait, okay then I'm going to pack a snack bag for you and Janice, please take it with you." "Okay." "And brother, um if you need to talk or just vent please remember we're all here for you and we're ready to listen, we know you're hurting…. but please…don't do anything rash like the last time." She said with tears in her eyes.
Okay, so the last time I got dumped by my girlfriend I tried swallowing a bottle of pills and that relationship was nowhere as serious as what I had with Kayla so I can't really blame them for being worried that I was going to do it again.
I force a smile as I walk back to her and hug her again. "I know you're all worried about me and I love you all for it, but I won't be doing that again. The thing is, I'm not really sure what, but something is different, I'm feeling a lot of things but suicidal isn't one of them, actually, the strongest feeling I have right now is disappointment because I was hoping beyond hope that she was different and I somehow convinced myself that she was, only to realize I was wrong and that hurt more than anything else." I said tears running down my face. "I'll go take a shower now," I said and walk away.
An hour later I entered Janice's room and saw a nurse sitting next to her bed with Faith in her hands. "Good night Mr. Jackson, Miss Alice left at seven, she said that she will call you. Miss Janice had a bowl of vegetable soup and fell asleep twenty minutes ago, she was in so much pain she couldn't even sit up long enough to finish it." The nurse explains. "Thank you, nurse, you can take a break," I said taking Faith from her. "Faith just had a bottle of formula so she should be okay for a while." The nurse said before leaving.
I had just put a sleeping Faith in her cot when my phone rang, it was my father. "Hi, Dad," I answer tiredly. "Hi Son Fabian is here, we're worried about you, how are you doing?" Dad asks. "I'm a mess; my Advance medical training begins tomorrow. I've been waiting for over a year for this and now that it's finally here I'm nowhere ready for it." I sigh heavily.
"Hang in there son; you can do this." "Can I dad? My mind, my emotions, my focus, it's all a mess. To be an A.M.S my focus has to be sharp and right now it's not even close." I said sadly. "Calm down little brother, I know this is hard but you've to take this one step at a time."
"It's just that I've been waiting so long for this opportunity Fabian I can't afford to mess this up, I just can't." "And you won't." His father said warmly. "We all believe in you son, you may be going through hell right now but you're strong and you're going to make a great A.M.S."
"Thanks, dad." "So how are Janice and Faith?" Dad asks. "They are both sleeping right now," I said smiling at them. "Good sleep is good for them." "By the way, dad, did you cancel Kayla's credit cards?" "Yes I did, that girl isn't getting another cent out of you and I'm going to make damn sure of that, why did you ask?"
"Because she showed up at the hospital this afternoon, and to be honest I'm worried about the baby she's carrying. Now I know that the possibility of that child being mine is very slim but it's a possibility nonetheless." I said tiredly. "Even if it's not mine I still want him or her to be born healthy."
Dad took a deep breath before speaking again. "Don't worry about Kayla and her child, I may have canceled her credit cards but I'm not going to let her starve, I'll ensure that the child is born healthy." He finishes. "Listen, brother, you just concentrate on your training and your job and leave Kayla to us alright." "Okay." "We'll see you in the morning," Dad said before ending the call.
I was thinking about what Kayla had said to me today when Faith began crying. I got up and took her from her cot then went back and sat in the chair cradling her in my arms. She fussed for about half an hour before falling asleep again. I laid her back in her cot and after checking on Janice and pulling the cover-up to her shoulders I went back to the chair and fell into an exhausted sleep.
