Four walls and a front door. Eleven sleeping bags and 4 rolls of toilet paper tucked inside a gas station with a hole in the roof, leaking in the very rare occurrence of rain water. Eleven people in search of something more. Eleven people settling for what we're lucky to have. It was nowhere near perfect, it would never be historic, it would never be a story for people to tell for generations, but it was enough to keep us alive and that was something we had to do. Not necessarily for ourselves but for everyone else.

Yesterday we had our first loss since the fall of the community. The worst news possible someone could ever hear. A child had died. A six year old with a heart of gold. Maria Travieso. She got bit and turned, right in front of Zahir. He left shortly after, carrying her corpse to God knows where.

Evelyn left earlier the next day. She left in search of Khai. I didn't want to tell her the odds, so I didn't.

I see the way the others look at me. There's blame in their eyes, mixed with concern and anger. I understand why, no matter how hard I try, I can't keep everyone alive.

My head was spinning, even more than usual. My eyes were blinded by the blood dripping from the top of my head, my hands were bonded with zip ties tightly behind my back.

Angie was beside me, sweat and blood covering all of her visible skin. She was shaking and muttering something inaudible. I wanted to reach out to here but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find the strength to move. I didn't know what was happening. The thought of death was becoming tangible.
