Chapter 9: Kora Midnight, The Voice In My Head

Oh not again, not now when there is a man hunt for me I said to myself when I found myself standing at the top of a mountain in the middle of that night. I was already self-aware of this particular feeling to know that it wasn’t a dream, but my body being taken over.

“Hello Bruce!”

“Woahhhh” I spun around in shock trying to figure out where the voice came from. I had initially believed that I was here alone, but the thought of someone lurking in the shadows while I remained clueless about my location was not giving me a good feeling. “Who is there?” My voice low and steady with my eyes scanning my environment for a hint that there was someone there with me, but I saw no one.

“Do not be frightened, please I mean you no harm,” the voice was gentle and soft, it was a lady's voice and except I'm losing some nuts, the voice was coming from my head, but I wasn’t completely sure. It felt like an angel was taking to me. “Who are you?” I kept my voice leveled in an attempt to shield my fear and the fact that if given the chance, my heart would leap from my chest in terror.

“My name is Kora Midnight, I'm the one who borrowed your body.” My emotions at this point were equivalent to a hurricane, a mixture of fear and anger now. “I guess that explains why I can’t see you,” I gave a half laugh now. “Because you are in my head, you have been in there all this while. But it doesn’t explain the ‘how’, you are obviously a celestial, but what I don’t get is how you are able to do take over my body from wherever you are.”

“You are right Bruce, I’m a celestial just like you are, and you and I are more alike than you know. I'm dead Bruce, I died over 600 years ago and I woke up a while back in your head, you were lying down on the road with people hovering around you.”

“That was the day of my accident, if my assumptions are correct, that was the day I became a celestial.” I could feel my temper step down a notch.

“Somehow I'm linked to you through your life force and so currently I'm alive so to say, my consciousness lives in you and such has never happened in our history.” There was silence for a moment, how do I wrapped my head around a spirit taking up residence in my body, I was still trying to process my new reality of being a celestial. I wanted to make more inquiries she beat me to it.

“I'm sorry for putting your life in danger Bruce, it was never my intention. Didn’t know I could take control, until three days ago, it was just like the flicking of a switch and your body was mine.” There was silence now, I could hear the distant sounds of owls and the smell of the trees beneath rose up to the sky.

Then she continued, “I was curious to see what had changed in the celestial realm, so I went one of our strong holds and just as I was about to leave, you woke up and your emotions mixed with mine gave a little energy surge that interrupted the assembly. I could have continued running when we were in the woods, but couldn’t resist the thrill of combat.” She was quiet now and I could feel her sadness.

“By choosing to engage with the guards I gave them enough time to get your description and now your life is in danger and for that I'm deeply sorry.

Saying nothing, I sat on ground, staring at the sky. The clouds though not many visible tonight, flowed with the gentle trend of the wind. “I understand why you did what you did, which makes it hard to remain upset with you. It’s just that all these is so overwhelming, Amy and Jake were born into this life, but not me. When I survived that accident, I waited weeks for something strange to happen but nothing did. Then just when I was beginning to forget about the whole deal, Morgan shows up in class and the music began.”

The thought of Morgan had me stopping for a moment, sooner or later I had to deal with the fact I'm intensely attracted to someone whose birthright was to kill people like me. But first things first, I had to deal with my residential spirit and then clear my name and finally figure out what I'm going to do about Morgan.

I'm impressed with the way you set your priorities,” I blinked rapidly now, she could hear my thoughts. “You know in this age there is a thing called invasion of privacy”

“Oh well, it’s not invasion if you leave your consciousness open.” I gave a little laugh now, something told me we’d get along just fine. Resting my head on the ground and my gaze on the clouds, I took a slow breath.

“So Kora, what are we doing here, I believe you have a reason for bringing us here especially when we are being hunted.”

“You just classified you and I as we,” I didn’t need see her face to know that she was surprised as well as pleased.

“Well we are in this together now, I die you die and seeing as you just came back from the great beyond, I'm betting you want to stay alive a bit longer.”

“I'm pleased to know that you feel that way, I brought you hear because Amy had filled you in about our world, which will make our conversation tonight easier. Bruce there are thing we need to discuss, but first we have to put your body into a transcendent state, so your consciousness can cross over to our new shared mind space, that way we can talk and your body remains in a state of rest.”

“Like meditation?”

“Yes, but a little deeper than that, all you have to do is close your eyes and trust me, I know we just met and I know you have no reason to trust me, but I hope you can.”

“I trust you Kora.”

“Just relax and take in the scents of the air, gently try to mentally follow the sound of my voice.” Those were the last words I heard as I began to feel myself drifting.

I felt a tingling at my spine as my eyes opened, welcoming the soft glow of lights around me. I saw myself standing at the base of a waterfall. It looked so beautiful with the stars glorifying the night sky and adding beauty to the waterfall. At the edge of the river bank very close to the waterfall I spotted a figure of a lady sitting with her back facing me. I gradually made my way towards her and I was consumed with the artistry of her appearance. She had long silk dark hair that fell on her shoulders and back. She wore a pretty gray gown with diamond glitters and sliver embroidery at its edges. The gown seemed like it was tailored specifically to fit her perfectly as it didn’t hide her beautiful body shape a little bit. Though she looked vulnerable in her sitting position, there was nothing vulnerable in her strong feminine features. She turned and smiled at me when I reached her, her face was beautiful, her ocean blue eyes reminded me of mine, but I think they looked better on her than they do on me. Her legs were long and spectacular like a sculptor to his time to mud her legs and hands. I could swear that with her beautiful features and her sitting posture, she looked like an art painting. What got my attention more was the fact that she looked no older than twenty years old.

“Not to state the obvious, I’d like to point out that you’re staring,” she said with a warm smile and rose to her feet. “I’m sorry it’s just that you’re really beautiful, like a painting,” her smile widens and there was no doubt that it was genuine.

“Thank you Bruce, you’re quit outstanding yourself. And I’ve got to say that the ocean blue eye color we share makes things a little wired but interesting,” she winked at me and held out her hands which I took casually like we were old friends. “Let’s take a walk as we come up with a plan to save your life,” with a smile I tugged her forward and we began to walk slowly along the river side admiring the waterfall. I couldn’t help but feel that this was going to be a long but eventful night.
