Five

Chapter 5

Sabby POV

We were watching Dr. Charles as he was performing surgery through the CCTV camera.

When Dr. Mark- senior surgeon was back from his vacation he was surprised when he watched the documented video of the surgery I did. He was happy and gave me a promotion.

I'd saved a life.

My first surgery on a human was successful.

He took all of my departments to celebrate my first surgery.

I was happy. I knew mother would be proud of me.

Dr Mark's voice brought me out of the good memories, "what do you think about what he's doing?" he asked me, looking at me inquisitively waiting patiently for my thoughts. I was one of his favorite students. I took the CT scan on the table and studied it.

"The man has hemangioblastoma, it's a vascular tumor of the central nervous system that originates from the vascular system, usually during middle age. Sometimes, these tumors occur in other sites such as the spinal cord and retina. It can be treated by using surgical excision or Gamma Knife Radiosurgery - a Gamma knife using Gamma radiation to treat the tumor cells especially in the brain. The device aims gamma radiation through a target point in the patient's brain" I spoke.

"But why can't he use the gamma knife radiosurgery?, that man he is too proud of himself" I muttered while Dr Mark chuckled.

"This is not the first time of you seeing Dr Charles like this. He never listens to anyone. He's full of himself" he commented.

"Then why can't he use brain mapping by using 3-dimensional imaging technology to operate on the brain, he can accurately target their dissection down to the smallest degree. And removed the tumor without producing any permanent neurological deficit in the patient. Sometimes during the surgery, he should let the patient be awake for a portion of the surgical procedure to help him understand the functional area of the brain near the tumor. This allows him to have successful surgery and not to mistakenly have impact on healthy, vital tissue"I suggested while Dr Mark eyes shone pride.

"Then the patient is allowed to return to consciousness after the brain has been exposed, and then interacts with the anesthetist as he stimulates the areas of the brain near the tumor. As in he should stimulate the brain where it controls feeling in eyes, to help in twitching of the eyes. And once the area of the eloquent cortex has been identified, the patient should be put back under general anesthesia and the surgery would be completed. Simple as ABC" I added dismissively while Dr Mark mouth twitched.

"Kudos to you kid, I'm very proud to be your teacher and friend" his eyes glistened with tears. He was happy and sad, he was my father's friend and he wished for his son to follow his lead but he took another path.

"What's Dr Charles doing?" my eyes widened in fear as I saw what he was doing. "He would kill the man. He was supposed to drill the hole at the vertical side, not horizontally. He will damage the pituitary gland" my voice trembled.

I disliked people who always thought they knew it all.

Who never took correction and Dr Charles was among them.

He was a pompous jerk.

Dr Mark stood abruptly from his chair and checked what I was talking about before he tried to talk to him through the bluetooth but he disconnected it and had a nasty look on his face.

"Tell the anesthetist to put the patient into unconsciousness but feel his surroundings then tell him to stitch it up so that air wouldn't enter the hole. The patient is using gamma knife radiosurgery" he ordered softly while I picked up my race.

I didn't even know how he attained his certificate, human lives don't really matter to him.

I ran through the stairs, nearly missing my step. I rushed to the changing room, put on my scrub gown, shoes and gloves.

I went to the anesthetist and replied to him, I walked to Dr Charles while he was glaring down at me.

He yanked me by my hand and dragged me out during the operation. I meant doing the surgery!, "how dare you, come in" he growled. He tightened his grip on my hand, I could feel my hand bruising due to how he held me.

"Dr Mark said.." his eyes darkened with malice. I heard he was somehow aggressive and had anger issues but I didn't think he would hit me.

Would he?.

"To hell what he said. You and your old man are really getting on my nerves" he snarled, "my theory was about to be accomplished but you" he glared hard at me.

"Just because your first surgery was successful and you had a promotion doesn't mean you should not know your place pauper and you could become a murderer" I bit my lips hard to stop me from screaming out and giving him the satisfaction of seeing me weak.

The word opened the wound I'd kept to myself.

Murderer!.

It opened the past, I was running from.

I couldn't call the securities or scream because he would always be free and no one could harm him because he was a brother to the 'blackknight' the mayor.

"The next time if you.." he was cut off. "Sir" the circulator nurse came urgently looking panicked.

"What?" he gritted his teeth while she gulped nervously.

This man is what we call a time bomb which explodes anytime, anywhere and anyhow!.

"The patient's breathing has changed, he he" we entered the room and saw the patient fighting for his life. I checked him and noticed he had a pulse but his breathing was weak.

"Connect the CPR" I ordered softly. His body was reacting to it slowly, "Add more" I said, feeling myself tearing up. The patient gasped out before everything gave up. The pulse stopped and he stopped breathing.

I walked backwardly and ran out of the operation room (OR) not after hearing the anesthetist announce, "Surgery ends 1:05pm, unsuccessful".

I ran out of the hospital, crying. My hands were trembling, I felt my heart tightened in my ribcage.

Murderer

The word that taunted me.

He was dead because of me.

He would have died if I've not intervened.

What position would his family be in when they hear the news?.

I needed my coffee to feel better for now.

I needed coffee to drown on my miseries.

I entered my car, drove shakily to the Cafe shop. I ordered my usual and noticed my purse wasn't with me. I took my coffee along with me, promising the waiter to bring the money.

I was wallowing in my thoughts, not looking ahead before I walked straight to a wall and all my coffee slipped.

"Oops" I said when I saw it wasn't a wall but a human being, a man specifically. He held me firmly on his arm before he pushed me away as if I burnt it and I fell on my ass.

"Ouch" I yelped in pain.

The man hissed and walked away but his wallet had fallen from his front pocket.

"Excuse me" I tried to call him but he had mixed with other citizens.

I opened his wallet, saw some of his ID cards and money and I hummed.
