You Reap What You Sow

In the wash of new light, Evangeline stood looking at herself in the mirror over the vanity table as Cerelia did up the buttons on the back of her dress. In the morning light that streamed through the high windows, she could see her face blanched, and the grey shadows under her eyes standing out in splotches.

She had never been one to stare in mirrors, but with a quick glance, Evangeline could see her pale face in the glass. She could remember her nightmare vividly last night. It came in visual puns and she lay awake with a heavy breath. It was a long time before Evangeline could sleep again and when she woke up, Cerelia knocked on her door.

Evangeline could see Cerelia reflected in the mirror as well. Her eyes fixed on the task at hand. There was a long silence between them. “I can pretty much able to help myself with the dress, Cerelia.” Evangeline said finally.

Cerelia laughed. It was a short laugh, but a real one. “I’m much obliged to be in your service, my lady.”
