A Soul's Treasure

The moment the door shut behind Evangeline, Luan slumped his body on the divan. It was as if his legs had been cut out from under him. His hands trembled as he raked his black hair. He looked grey with a mixture of horror, shock and what looked almost like a relief.

"Luan." Zander said, taking a step toward his friend. "Do you really think-"

"Please." Luan spoke in a low voice, cutting Zander off. "Leave me alone."

"So, you can do what?" Zander demanded. "Wreck your life some more? What was that about?"

Luan shook his head in fear. "I sent her out. It was the best thing for her."

Zander sighed. "You sure did a hell of a lot more than sending her out. You destroyed her heart. Did you see her face?"

"Believe me it was worth it." Luan said. "You wouldn't understand."

"It might be the best for her," Zander said. "But you aren't. I hope it winds up worth it for you."

Luan turned his face away. "Please, Zander."
