Chapter 16

Baylor shook his head the negative, seeming just as confused as I was at that moment. Dark brows lifted in an expression of sardonic questioning and the perciptible tightening of his mouth tightened into a thick, unyielding line.

"I sincerely have no idea," he confessed, truly looking sincere. "But, I confronted him about it, and he promised. He promised those animals were going to be the last living things he is ever going to hurt."

I shook my head slowly in disbelief, mouth pulled into a tight pout. My innards shook and trembled with fear for the nearest future. Of course, I wasn't believing in what Gabriel—Baylor's father—had told him. I couldn't believe in that lie and it struck me almost as hard as thunder when I remembered the text I'd received from an unknown person.
