"You know, I still think magic is a total bust right?"
Marissa gives me a side eye but goes back to her work.
It's been a lazy day for me and Marissa, well for me at least. I've been following Marissa while she does all the hard work.
Now that I think about it, that happens a lot.
Anyways, I just think it's simply ridiculous how a fucking god gets to decide who has powers.
"Ren, your gonna regret that."
I look back to Marissa, to find her paused at her work smiling at me.
"What so you can read minds too?"
"Nope, you simply have a bad habit of speaking your thoughts"
She gets up and walks into my kitchen.
Rude.
I get up from my spot on the couch and head over to where Marissa is making some sort of snack.
I hope it's spicy, I've been craving spicy foods like crazy ever since we got here-
Ow- shit!
I tripped on nothing, this is bull! But before my face is met with a face full of splinters I stop and am levitating above the ground.
I hear Marissa mumble and look at her using her magic to keep me levitated.
"See? Told you, you'd regret it, work of the gods"
Im levitated and put back on my feet
"You know what i call it, bullshit."
Marissa bursts into a fit of laughter.
2—-
Today it's just me and Marissa, when she came over Sara wasn't with her. I thought it was weird but Marissa just waved me off I mean I don't care but it's just weird.
Marissa wants to get some stuff from the market so that's where we are right now.
It's about to be sunset so not as many people are around but there are some doing last-minute shopping.
Im honestly just following Marissa around, well, more like dragged. Sara isnt even here to entertain me.
My mind focuses back on the real world and Marissa is still over by that one stupid stall with some stupid glass figures.
My eyes close and the noises of the town square surround my senses.
"That'll be two silvers"
"Mommy!"
"Help!"
"Do you have an order of salmon in?"
"Shut your fucking mouth you mutant!"
Well then, my eyes open and I look around from where I heard that last piece of the conversation and my eyes lock on an alleyway.
I start to walk over, now, I'm not actually gonna do anything I'm just interested.
When I get to the alleyway it's just horrific.
Two men stand around an orange cat hybrid. There's blood all over the girl and one of the men pulls out a small knife and walks toward the hybrid. While the other sits there and laughs.
Is that, Sara..?
I reach for the two daggers at my boots. Before I rush into to attack, Marissa pats my shoulder. And stars whispering spells.
The guy with the knife is now at Sara, the knife trailing down her face.
I can't just sit here I mean Sara is there about to get fucking killed.
My body moves before my brain and my daggers stab into the closest guys thighs. A scream retches out of him and I pull my daggers out of his thighs and step aside. He looks at me in fear.
"WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, Y-YOU CRAZY BITCH!"
I look over to the other guy, he's so goddamn loud.
He sees his friend and runs over to him. I really could care less but he needs to shut up. We don't need those guard parasites on us.
I walk over to him and my right dagger lifts his head and my left one slits right above his eyebrows. He starts crying even more. The blood from his wound clouds his eyes and with my right dagger still under his chin, I whisper into his ear.
"Don't ever come near us again"
He whimpers like the pathetic ass he is.
Huh, I guess seeing red does actually happen. I slot my daggers into their sheath
Oh, right, Sara
I go to Sara and crouch down, looking for any major injuries. I used to skateboard so I know what to look for, but it's just a couple of bruises and little cuts.
"Sara, hey, you're safe now."
She looks at me and clings to me for life. I hug her back but, ow, she is hurting me.
Marissa runs over and takes Sara from me, thank god, I didn't really want to push her off. I mean im, not a heartless monster I know she almost got murdered it just doesn't affect me.
"What did they do to you, why did they do this to you?"
Classic Marissa, Sara looks at her then back down and mutters.
"They, they said i- I was disgusting and shouldn't- shouldn't exist."
Marissa has this look on her face that I can only describe as if she drank liquid rage.
Im so fucking confused.
Marissa looks at me, seeing my confused face.
"Katursh, this country, hybrid trafficking is a big thing so a lot of people don't like hybrids seeing them as monsters, we've never had a problem here. Those caza…"
She shuts her mouth, turning her attention back to Sara.
"Like racism."
Now its Marissa's turn to give me a look
"Sorry, I'm just talking to myself."
3—-
You know, I'm to the point of missing my mom.
I need to go back. I can't stay here forever, I know that. But I'm getting so used to this, this stable life. I'm not happy, well I am, sometimes, and that's the problem!
I feel like I'm letting my friends down at home. Or you remember my little rant from me figuring out my magic, yeah, that happens a lot more than it should.
I just can't help it, I'm always feeling a sense of guilt and pain and a thousand different emotions and it makes me separate myself from this world, the present.
I'm just so tired, so so tired.
I'm so tired of these emotions and this place.
I just want to be normal again.
Huge pressure is applied from all around me and it's so comforting and soothing.
My eyes are already closed and I drift into a peaceful darkness and euphoric emptiness.
Before I know it my eyes open to me laying down on my bed, Sara clinging to my arm, and Marissa reading some dumb bedtime story.
Well, I'm too tired to be smart so it's fine to be dumb.
My eyes close and my ears tune into Marissa's story
4—-Ren and Sara bringing Marissa to bed after she fell asleep at her workstation
This time is one of the few times that me, Sara, and Marissa aren't at my house.
Were at Sara and Marissa's house. I have no reason to be here but me and Sara have been talking the entire time so it's been nice.
"Ren, it's getting kinda late, shouldn't you head home?"
I look out the window and it is about sundown.
"Yeah I guess"
I get up and head towards Marissa but find she is head down at her desk. I poke her and it looks like she's passed out cold.
"Huh"
I'll just carry her to her bed I guess. I sit her up in her chair and try to pick her up but fail because she's like a grown-up.
Sara sees my failings and comes to help me and with Marissa's room being on the second floor i have to fight the stairs.
We do get her into her bed and surprisingly she's still asleep.
How much sleep does she even get?
Whatever.
I close the door and smile at Sara.
