She ran towards the scream. She reached a single lane street. Multiple people were there standing still watching the events unfold.
"We have to wait for the heroes to come!"
"Yes, they will save the kid and capture the villain."
"Look they are here!"
Misaka saw some peculiar people arriving. Those included one giant lady, a wood man and various other persons with weird mutations.
'What is this? No esper power mutates the body so much. Furthermore this seems to be common here. I should get closer and see what's going on.'
As she went closer the heat from the flames assaulted her.
"A hero with the right quirk must come to take down this villain."
"It's good the kid is struggling by using his quirk."
'Heroes; Villains; I can guess what they are. If they are waiting someone with the right quirk to come, does that mean that quirks are their powers? Whatever, I have to save that person.'
"I think it's the villain All Might fought."
"Oh my god, does that mean All Might is here?!"
It didn't matter if a Hero was coming. The kid had to be saved immediately. Just as she got ready to release a lightning blast a green haired kid ran past her and through the crowd.
"Damn it kid. Get back here, the Villain will Kill you"
"I have to save Kacchan. I can't stop nowI"
She had not yet managed to fire her lightning when the boy attacked the Villain with a school-bag. She hesitated. Besides her now though, stood a 2.2 meter tall man. He jumped in the alley.
"Is that All Might? That Villain is done for!"
"Heroes should always be ready to risk their lives, when fighting Villains. Detroit Smash!
As he shouted that a massive shockwave blew away the Slime Villain. Rain started falling right then.
'Huh, wait rain? It was sunny not a moment ago. Does that mean?'
"He changed the weather with just one punch."
"So strong! The only one worth the title of the symbol of Peace."
Misaka quickly turned to flee away from the scene after seeing how it evolved. She understood how out of her depth she was. A person with super strength, a wood person, a giant Lady. There was no way this was her world. If it were she would know about such bizarre things. She had to learn more about them.
First things first though she had to find somewhere and acquire money for living. Finding the nearest terminal she hacked into a bank. To her surprise it was much easier to get in than even the weakest of Academy Cities databases. Discreetly making a new account she funneled funds from some accounts to her own, newly created one. Next she searched for an apartment, somewhere to live. There she encountered the first problem. If she wanted to rent somewhere she had to have an I.D. Thankfully there was a Database that had e-Id's. Hacking there was child's play to her and five minutes later she was officially a citizen. She found a listing near her location, and walked to there.
There she found a well-kept apartment building. Going up the stairs she found the first condo, where the owner supposedly lived. She rang the bell once and then once more. As she was getting ready to press it again she heard a masculine voice through the door.
"I am coming, stop ringing the bell. I told you I don't want any of your packages."
The door opened.
"Who are you girl and what do you want?"
The one who opened the door was a middle-aged man with an unkempt look.
"I am here to rent an apartment."
"Where did you find that I had available flats."
"In the Internet. Where else?"
"Ok. Come in with me to do the paperwork. What's your name girl?"
"It's Misaka Mikoto sir."
"Don't call me sir. It makes me feel old. My name is Kenzo Haru."
"Yes Haru-san."
"Good. Do you identification with you? "
"Yes, here" Misaka showed him a copy of her newly-created Id
"All right. Everything looks good. How will you pay the rent though?"
"This is my bank account. Bill everything there."
"Here are the keys. Your apartment is on the second floor, third door on your right."
She quickly went up the stairs and entered the apartment. Luckily the room was already furnished so she didn't have to buy any furniture. She was surprised to see a computer there but she wouldn't complain. It was time for research. She booted the computer up and accessed the web.
2 hours later she was done with her surfing on the web. If before she was 50% sure she was not in her world now she had learned undoubtedly that she was in another world. The first sign of something wrong was the complete absence of Academy City. No matter how deep she searched she found nothing. Another sign was the year. It was the year 2169 here, but back in Academy City it was 2026. A difference of 143 years. Nonetheless what intrigued her more were those quirks they had. In contrast to her own powers that came from her Personal Reality quirks were a genetic evolution. About a century or two ago a Baby that shined with light was born. From that point the extraordinary became reality. The sad truth of this world though was that not everyone was born equal. Almost 20 percent of the population faced discrimination for being quirkless. She was no stranger to discrimination due to lack of powers. Back in Academy City countless Level 0's and generally weaker Espers, had to deal with the bullying of the stronger Espers.
Quirks could be categorized into three main categories. The first and most common ones were Emmiter type Quirks. If she had to put her power in one of the categories it would be in this one. Basically it allowed them to alter or control the environment around them. The second and least common types were Transformation Quirks. These Quirks involved the user undergoing a temporary alteration of some kind. Finally there were Mutant quirks. These Quirks permanently changed the user's physiology. These Quirks abnormalities could be passed down without the Quirk passing down.
She had also looked up on the History of Villains and Heroes, and various other topics of interest in this new world. The main thing that had surprised her though was the lack of technological Breakthroughs. With the advent of quirks technology was left behind to stagnate, innovation only used on Heroes Costumes and Support Gear. If this were Academy City, she was unable to think of the technological height the City would have reached.
'Enough research for now.'
She had more pressing matters right now. Mainly clothing issues. Miraculously her Tokiwadai uniform was still intact, but that was the only clothing she had. The other issue was of course the lack of food. Sighing she found the closest supermarket and stocked up on supplies. She didn't trust her cooking and as such bought a lot of instant food, cereal and milk. It was still early afternoon. She had time to go buy clothes in person.
Going out in the streets she was surprised at how lively it was. Normally in Academy City she was unable to enjoy going out alone, or with friends due to the early curfews that were imposed by the Dorm master. She shivered remembering about her. Thinking about the dorm master made her think about the subject of school. Although she already knew the curriculum, graduating not only meant she could enroll in U.A, but also meant that she could meet new people.
She found many respectable clothing shops. Something not too high-class but not something shoddy. She browsed many shop's catalogues and eventually chose one to buy from. Now that she didn't have to worry about maintaining the Tokiwadai image in the city she could buy and wear whatever she wanted. She chose something practical that didn't hinter her movements. Perhaps it was weird seeing someone buy so many clothes in one day, but she didn't mind.
General Pov
Near Misaka Mikoto right now a crime was taking place. A gang of men had surrounded a group of little girls in a dark alley.
"Give us your money, and we will let you live" A menacing, hooded man threatened
"Hey boss, that girl over there is a real beauty. Why don't we play a little bit with her."
"Yeah, boss."
" Hn, you are right. Listen up if you leave the girl here we will let you leave you peacefully in one piece."
"No, they would never do that, you rapist!"
"Are you sure? Why have you been left alone then?"
"What do you mean? Wait, no! Why did they leave me behind? How could they?"
"It doesn't matter if you fight back or call for help. My quirk, Black Lightning, is more than enough for the small fries that would come here."
"Help me!" The girl screamed desperately.
"I told you it's futile."
Suddenly the sound of electric discharge sounded in the small alleyway. Two bodies fell down flat.
"Who are you?" The leader of the downed men asked.
"What is it to you?" The unknown figure asked.
"You can't stop me, you know? You are dead!" The leader yelled and shot multiple beams of black lightning.
The girl stood still and faced them head on. The lightning exploded on contact charring everything there.
"What a fool. Who does she think she is? To take my Black Lightning head-on. Damn it the girl escaped!"
"Ho… Black Lightning was it? Interesting."
"You? How are you still alive? My Black Lightning is strong enough to turn normal humans to dust." He sounded frantic. It was the first time someone had escaped unscathed from his attacks
"I am not a normal human then am I? How about I give you a taste of your own medicine? Don't worry I will hold back." The voice cockily replied
"What do you mean? No, I won't give up without a fight. Die!"
"As if weak lightning like that, would do something to me." Multiple blasts were shot at her but she ignored them, merely absorbing them.
"Thank you for charging me up by the way."
The last thing the criminal saw before he was knocked out was the face of a young girl wearing a school uniform.
Misaka Pov
How peculiar. This criminal had some kind of lightning power. A lightning strike that at only a million volts was able to do this much damage. I had managed to analyze it and reproduce it. At the same time this fight revealed something to me. This society was too dependent on heroes. Police were understaffed and Heroes were unable to focus on the street-level Villains, ignoring the struggles of the masses. However such injustices being allowed to happen didn't sit well with me. That's why from now on I would become a Vigilante. The number of Vigilantes had dwindled in recent days, the emergence of the symbol of Peace scaring Villains off. However All Might could not be everywhere at once, and had been making less and less appearances. A Vigilante on the same Level as him, that cleaned the streets, would deter an even bigger amount of People from Villainy. That is because Vigilantes were feared by the populace, acting without taking the law in account. That kind of person could be called the Symbol of Vigilantism. That would be her goal, before becoming a pro Hero.
