Chapter 14: Breakfast & Clients

-

Emerald and Darius sat in a diner looking through the menus they were given by the waiter earlier. "What are you going to order?" Emerald asked him. He looked up from his menu, shrugging. "Everything looks good, have you made up your mind yet?" She nods closing her menu.

"Yeah, I'm going to order some waffles and orange juice." He closed his menu too. "I'll have that as well, it sounds good." When the waiter came back, they placed their orders.

"What do you do for a living?" He asked her making her a little surprised because anytime they talked and he asked her a question it was usually about the Atwoods but she shook off her shock and answered the question. "I'm a published author. What about you?"

"I'm a writer as well, but I never got the chance to publish anything." He told her sadly, she raised her eyebrow now curious about the situation surrounding that.

"Why not? What happened?" A sigh left him as he wondered if he should tell her about what happened but looking into her eyes he could tell she wasn't the type to tell everyone what she heard.

"Well, about a year ago, I was working as a journalist, I wrote my own books on the side. Amoy and her aunt had gotten into a fight, that was normal for them so I didn't think much about it, a few days had passed and I got fired for no reason I didn't really mind as I knew the boss didn't like me that much but when I tried to get a new job no one would even have an interview with me." Emerald eyebrows furrowed as she listened to the story even more curious than before.

"Later at Amoy's family dinner, I found out it was her aunt Lin's doing, from the taunts she threw my way. The woman ruined my career and had the nerve to smile in my face, I tried getting someone to publish my books too and no one would do it. I was going to self publish but I thought what was the point? I knew she would find a way to ruin that too, her whole family would." The green-eyed woman looked at him with pity, she could only imagine how frustrating that was.

"I'm sorry." He shook his head sending a reassuring smile as she placed her hand on his giving him a comforting squeeze.

"It's fine, I've moved past it. Nothing good comes from hatred." It amazed her to see how calm he looked, if she was in his shoes, she would have gotten revenge but what she didn't know was that revenge is a dish best served cold and the plates he was serving were still hot.

"What did Amoy say about all this?" She asked as she remembered what his parents had said about her. His mind went back to last night when she apologized, this brought a small smile to his face at the memory. "She apologized for her aunt's behaviour." He told her just as their food came, they both began to eat talking occasionally.

His phone had buzzed, when he looked down at the message he saw it was from William, it said. 'We're having dinner at Luigi's Lasagne tonight at 8'

Amoy packed up her stuff ready to leave the room, but she was stopped, by Noah, who was a part of the marketing team,

"Amoy, we're still waiting on your response about our idea last night." He reminded her, she forced a smile remembering

what they had suggested last night.

-Flashback-

She sat at the head of the table, waiting for someone to speak. "What was so important to talk about that the meeting had to be held now?" A woman known as Emilee cleared her throat before she spoke.

"This meeting was called about the company image, it's not appealing to some of our clients." Amoy wanted to roll her eyes knowing exactly which 'clients' it wasn't appealing to.

"And what do you suggest we do about unhappy clients?" She asked even though she knew she wouldn't like the response.

"We thought about it and after seeing you and your husband tonight, we thought it would be wise for both of you to be the face of the company. The unhappy clients may feel a bit comfortable with him in the room." Amoy sent them a tight smile.

"With all due respect, let's stop using 'unhappy clients' when it's prideful men whose egos get hurt when they have to make a deal with me, a woman, to save their shitty businesses. If they're unhappy tell them I'll gladly accept the fine for breaking the contract. Excuse me, I have to get back to the party with people who are actually living in this century, who respect me as a businesswoman."

-End of Flashback-

"I thought I made it rather clear last night." She said continuing to clean up her work area, he nods looking at his coworkers. "We spoke to the board and they thought it was a great idea, especially if it makes the clients happy." She sighed looking at Noah, who knew she had to compile since the board was on their side.

"Of course you went to the board. Bob write down all the ideas they have for this new 'image' for the company." She moved to leave but Noah stopped her, speaking once again. "You are just as prideful as them." She shook her head,

looking his way.

"I'm not prideful, I just have morals, knowing you, I doubt you know the difference. I hope you all have a wonderful day,

I need to get to my other meeting." She left the conference room just as her phone buzzed, she looked down at it realizing it was a text from her father.

'We're having dinner at Luigi's Lasagne tonight at 8' Amoy sighed for the 10th time, she had a lot to do today, but now she had to finish everything before 8.

-

"That's your big plan?" Oscar asked looking and sounding unimpressed. "You said I should get Amoy to start taking interest in your son and that's exactly what I'm doing. I know why methods aren't what you would use, but it's working." William told them, Oscar and his wife exchanged looks of doubt but he sighed.

"Fine, do what you have to. I have one question though." Faith said, he sat in the black chair waiting for the question.

"What is it?"

"Why isn't my son working?" William had just realized they didn't know because it was only recently they began to check up on Darius.

"He was a journalist but my sister got him fired because she and Amoy had a disagreement, she made sure no one would interview him or publish his books."

"I guess I'll have to change that." Faith states. "You may go."
