In fact they were trying harder to drag the humans into the fight than they were in defense of the strategically important water source. Important to the elves and humans, as it was not far enough away from the gates of the nearest dwarven settlement to have an real value to them if they launched a counter offensive against the elves.

By dawn's early light it became clear that the main objective of the dwarves had been achieved, meaning that humans were starting to draw eleven blood and vice versa.
