A Cold Morning

The words spelled across my view as I lay back into the ground, my body so close to his skewered corpse. My entire body dragged down by the pain, the immense exhaustion sweeping across my body in waves, back and forth like a tide of anguish.

I did it…

Ella I did it…

I won, is this what you wanted, for me to be the best? Am I worthy yet? Am I powerful enough to join you?

I really am pathetic, I disturb you even in death, my only hope, desire is to die… and yet I can't, I keep seeing you everywhere I go, so why can't I reach you?

"Congratulations Assassin, now for your reward, the money has already been wired, but there is one last thing, you can ask me one question that I must answer…

So most powerful of humans, what do you wish to ask God?"

"Haha well judging by you not talking about it, I'd have to go for, what are the gems from the first round for?"

"Bravo, excellent I was so hoping someone would ask that, with one hundred gems you can ask for any item, and we will make it… the stats will be relative to your current level of course"

"Haha, well I have three hundred…"

"Yes you can ask for three items."

"Now?"

"If you wish

"Can I choose effects or is it purely cosmetic?

"You can but up to a point I won't make you a notebook that kills anyone or a wig that changes color and boosts your power to the level of gods or a shield that can take on many properties or…well you get the point"

"Well then shall we get started?"

"I don't see why not."

I woke up in the morning, my feet hitting the cold floor still encased in sweat. I slipped my clothes on and walked through the door, silently and steadily.

But as I squeezed my body through the door and into the morning air a small feeble hand grabbed my jacket.

It was Ellie,

"Hey… what's up?"

"Lee, I don't want to go to school."

"Is this about the bullies?"

She said nothing only nodding her head, her eyes started to shake as if were about to well up with tears

"You remember Lev?"

"Yeah he came over a few times."

"Well I talked to him, and he'll protect you but just in case ill come to pick you up today and if they do it point them out and ill kill them because??"

"You're the assassin!"

"That's right, I'll protect you, so you don't end up as lousy as me, okay?"

"Yeah."

"Right, have a great day at school."

I stepped into the blue tinted light of the morning, the piercing air bringing back the feelings of the night before, horrible painful feelings, ones I didn't want to have, that anger… It's come out twice now… is that me?

I slapped myself purging the thoughts from my head, I have two goals today.

1. Talk to Kate and apologize.

2. To survive.

You can do this Lee, just keep going. A few hours ago you were fighting demons. You can deal with a couple math lessons.

I pushed through the cold pulling up my hood and slotting two headphones into my ears, loud music blasting through and surging through my spine. I walked for a few minutes uninterrupted in my cocoon of music and sleep. Until from behind two arms wrapped around my body grabbing my headphone and placing a chin on my shoulder.

"So this is what you listen to? A little upbeat."

"What did you think I listened to?"

"I don't know but something sad."

"Is that all you think of me?"

"Pretty much."

"Cold."

"Not as cold as you were last night, that was overkill my guy."

No it was necessary, the pain sensitivity was turned to the max so his attack hurt like hell,"

"n=more than like a thousand spears shooting through your chest?"

"Fair point, I didn't really think that through. I may have pissed off a lot of people."

"Well at least you have your loyal friend."

"And who is that?"

"Me of course, how you can take the friendship of a beautiful girl like me for granted is beyond me."

"How you can be that arrogant is beyond me."

"See he's so mean to me, oh god won't you send me a knight in shining armor and save me from this evil assassin?"

"Well seeing as god made me three overpowered items I'm going to say he'll pass on that"

"Ooooh what did you get?"

"Well I'll just have to show you. Patience."

"See, so mean. Hahaha I'll see you tonight then?"

"I won't be able to breathe until then." We laughed and walked in silence listening to the music, her shoulder still resting on my shoulder and her hands still wrapped around me.

"Psye… I haven't forgotten our promise, ill answer any question you have."

"Same… and then you and your sister can come and live with me, like one big happy family, well except for you… you're kind of a bummer."

"Ouch."

We walked into the gates, heads turning to stare at us, mouths dropping to the floor and people gasping like old southern people. It was only then that I remembered how we were walking. I felt like a thermometer with red rising through my face like a rocket shooting into my hair. But she didn't let go, even once we got inside, she didn't let go. Only when I took off my hoodie did she walk away.

I stood in the opening to my locker and listened to her joining her friends, almost falling over laughing from their shock.

"Oh my god why did you do that?"

"So creepy."

"Did he stalk you? Or threaten you?"

But her response was probably the most funny to me.

"I did tell you guys, his arm is comfortable."

And with that she walked off leaving the girls gaping.
