Fear

It was well after lunch when the medicine wore off, and she gradually returned to consciousness. At the first groan she uttered from moving her stiff muscles, Slaton turned toward her. He had been sitting propped up on the bed working on his laptop as she slept. He had kept his promise and never left her side. With technology, he could work from home anytime.

“You okay?” He laid the book he was reading on the nightstand beside him and turned completely around.

She opened one eye. “Not sure if I’m alive or in the first level of hell.”

He chuckled. “You’re alive.”

“Good. Was scared for a second. How long have I slept?” She managed to open the second eye.

He glanced at his watch. “About five hours.”

“What? Oh, no. I’m sorry.” Brenna groaned and turned her head towards him.

“For what? For resting after a car accident?” He leaned over her and gently kissed her lips. “Personally, I was enjoying it.”

She arched one eyebrow. “Taking advantage of a comatose woman?”
