Around the Fire

“Brenna! Brenna! What’s wrong?” Slaton saw the frozen look on her face, and fear ripped through him. As he ran toward her, his eyes darted everywhere. His body went on alert for any danger. Nothing was in sight. He tried to see beyond the obvious for something hidden. Nothing again. Only when he reached her and grabbed her by her sleeves did he notice that the enemy was in her head.

“Brenna!” He gently took her by her shoulders. Her eyes vacantly turned to him. In them he saw all the terror of the kidnapping and near-death experience. “Brenna!” Her eyes focused in on him.

“I was there again.” She managed to whisper. “I was alone. I was confused and unsure where the road was.” She reached out and gripped his shirt in her fist until her knuckles turned white. “I felt the blood and heard noises in the woods. Something was coming at me and I didn’t know what it was.”
