The night passed uneventfully. No one broke into her room. No one haunted her dreams. The pain meds she took before falling asleep knocked her out completely.
Brenna rose as the first glimmers of the sun flickered through the pulled-down blinds. They were like small fingers reaching in to awaken those that slumbered. Brenna blinked and smiled at the brightness that hit her. The smile was replaced with a small frown as the thoughts of the previous day and night returned like a tidal wave to her. Her breathing increased as she tried to remind herself that she was safely in a home where no one could touch her.
She didn’t linger long in the bed. Moving cautiously she got up. All her muscles still ached, but she could already tell they were improving. They didn't scream nearly as loud as they had yesterday.
