After dinner, Slaton took Brenna’s hands as they stood on the porch in the near moonless night. He caressed the back of her hand with his thumb as he looked into her eyes.
“Babe, don’t be scared.”
She smiled as she leaned against him. “I’m not. A little nervous maybe, but not scared.” She looked out into the dark night more unsure now of what awaited her.
“Mom will take you in and explain things. We’ll all be outside guarding the shelter. I will be right by the door if you need me, okay?”
“I’m sorry.” She looked up at him.
“For what?”
She turned and laid her hands on his chest. His arms came around and held her tight. “You can’t be part of the pack because of me.”
He smiled in appreciation and caressed her cheek with his fingers. “Only for a while. Until this is resolved. I’m happy being near you.” He leaned down and kissed her gently on the lips.
They heard the screen door open as Tahnee stepped out with Grey and Layford right behind her.
