It was close to lunch time when everything changed. Slaton stopped cold. He looked around with his hand on the knife handle he had attached to his belt. Turning around quickly, he grabbed Brenna and pulled her close. Layford and Miakoda were immediately on alert, looking around ready to transform if need be.
“Wh…What’s wrong?” Brenna didn’t attempt to pull away but she was looking everywhere, trying to determine what had gotten Slaton’s attention. A sound from above pulled her eyes up. The image of the bird appeared again and flew hard and fast at her. The mark began to glow and burn lightly. She didn’t budge this time as she watched the bird’s movements. A part of her called out to the bird. It disappeared inside her, giving her the strength she needed.
