It was a few days later as he was coming back from hunting with six rabbits as a result that he encountered Dyani on river bank. She had just arrived to gather water and turned to see him coming down the worn path. She smiled slightly as she turned back to her task. Jolon decided to take a chance and let her know he felt the same for her. He was tired of living a lie.
“Dyani, let me help you.” He dropped the carcasses he carried as well as his rifle and rushed over to pick up the leather pouch.
She pulled back in surprise and stammered, “Oh, no, no, I am strong. I can do the work.” She tried to keep her eyes away from his, but the shock of it all did not help her. This was woman’s work. It was her work.
Jolon reached out and touched her face. “I know you can. I watch you.”
Dyani blushed harder and shook her head. “That is not right. Akando would not be pleased.” Her voice was musical to him.
