Brenna and Slaton were moving along when Miakoda suddenly appeared over a small rise. Her face was flushed, and she appeared scared. Slaton moved toward her quickly and grabbed her arms.


“Are you okay?” He looked her over for any obvious injuries.


She nodded. “I…I just ran. Nothing is wrong.” She avoided looking Slaton in the eyes.


Slaton looked over at Brenna and shrugged. He let Miakoda walk away and take up the rear guard. They kept walking but were confused as to what had happened. If there was anything seriously wrong, she would have said.


A few minutes later, Layford walked up to them, whistling a simple tune. Brenna and Slaton’s eyes met as he took up the position next to Mia with a “Hey” thrown at them. Miakoda moved to the side, trying to put distance between them. Her reaction made Layford’s smile widen.


Slaton began to smile and winked at Brenna. She moved closer to him.
