Slaton moved them forward quickly. They saw nothing around them to signify Jolon’s presence. Only a few animals scampered about, yet their very movements were enough to warn them as they were all heading away from the area the humans were located. The leaves barely fluttered in the still air. It was as though everything around them was expecting something, and they knew exactly what that something was.


Moving around a small outcropping of rocks, they found themselves at the base of a mountain. This was the stopping point for the horse. He could not continue with them. The terrain was going to be hard enough for the four of them. There was no way the horse could make it. Layford ran ahead to find a good place to get settled in case of an attack or to hide. Miakoda flew above, looking for anything after them. So far they had seen nothing out of the ordinary but all their senses knew otherwise.
