The air was silent. The wind died. The world held its breath. No one moved. Miakoda hung suspended in the air. The world waited. It was the sound of a splash that broke the trance.

Tahnee was reading the journals, searching for more answers when her head shot up. Tossing the books aside, she turned around on the couch, looking out the open door. Her face was set as she focused to those in the distance. The clock on the living room wall was the only sound to be heard as it became louder and louder with each tick.
“No!”
“No!” she screamed as her face twisted in agony.

The wolf carefully walking behind a house stopped and lifted his head. He sniffed the air before raising his head and letting out a mournful howl that was echoed many times throughout the woods. Other howls followed until only they could be heard.
