Discovery

Miakoda waited to turn around until she was sure Layford had entered the water. The sound of a small splash brought her around to see him grimace from the cold and shake the feeling away. She then watched as he disappeared and reappeared after a few minutes. Taking a deep sigh, she sat up and looked over at the nearest wall where grapes hung from the vines. Layford had his job to do. Miakoda had hers. Brenna had had nothing to eat in two days. She needed something in her system for her and the baby. The grapes would be perfect.

Brenna was staring at the ceiling as Miakoda made her way back to her with the berries in hand. She hoped the dark purple of them would entice Brenna.

“Here are some berries.” Miakoda sat down cross-legged next to Brenna. No response came. “Come on, Brenna. You need to eat.” Still no response. “Think of the baby.”
