Miakoda followed Layford as they made their way through the now familiar tunnels. She was beginning to recognize characteristics of each one from cuts on the wall to how they angled.
She was also beginning to recognize more of Layford: how often he ran his hands through his hair to get it out of his eyes, how his smile always started with just a pull of one corner of his lips, how his eyes would sparkle before the tease came out of his mouth, and how much he watched her.
Now that she was aware of it, she understood that he had been watching much more often than she had realized. He would use his hair as a cover sometimes and only move it when her or someone else’s attention was on him. When she thought he was watching one thing, he’d be finding ways to watch her.
