Not the Expected

“Let her go, Jolon. I’m here.”

“Well, that could be debated.” He ran a hand down Tahnee’s arm.

“Jolon!” Her voice rose in anger.

A smile pulled at his lips. “For you, my dear.” He removed his hand from around Tahnee’s throat but held onto her arm. He leaned down without taking his eyes off Brenna and whispered in Tahnee’s ear. “Thank you.”

Tahnee ran straight for Grey whose arms were open waiting on her. He pulled her close but stayed nearby. There was no way either one was leaving that clearing with Brenna there at Jolon’s mercy.

Brenna watched as Tahnee rushed away from Jolon. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the reunion of her parents.

“Tahnee, you okay?”

“Yes. Be careful.”

“Now, I’ve let her go. Are you ready to dance with me?”

“I can’t let you do this.”

“Do what? I just ask for a dance. What is wrong with that?”

Brenna watched him without a word. Within her ear, she heard a whisper.

Dance.

What?

Dance. Give him what he wants. That is the only way.
