Aftermath of her death

Now that the widow was dead, he could relax a little. The first thing he did was reload his guns and then slowly approached the corpse. Dean stayed vigilant even though his enemy was dead. His senses were still activated and told him everything up in a 10 meter radius around him. He wasn't going to be surprise attacked by letting his guard down.

'Hmm? What is that?'

With his perception Dean was able to see a small grey stone slightly visible inside the widow's mouth. Dean carefully tried to dissect the spider's chelicerae (it's jaw/mouth) but failed due to his knife being unable to cut through the hard armor and his own strength not being able to pry open the tightly shut mouth.

Now that the widow was dead its body was no longer able to contract its muscles with its blood. It's body had now curled up and was keeping it's muscles tightly closed.

Dean could only reluctantly stop his approach and find another way, he looked at his gun but quickly shook that thought away.

'I don't want to accidentally damage it'

Looking around for any ideas, Dean's eyes stopped at a leg he had shot off earlier. The blue blood was leaking out of the joint area and carried the same acidic smell. Dean picked it up and examined it first.

'Its smells a lot like Bug spray'

The leg was sharp and was easily better compared to his knife. It didn't look like a spider leg but looked similar to a black obsidian spear. The sharp tip would easily impale anything and its hardness was stronger than most metals. Dean recalled how the widow had pierced her own body with these and could easily picture what would've happened if it hit him instead.

'Widows fury'

He chuckled at the name he had given it, remembering the anger the widow displayed being pierced by her own attacks. He waved it around her corpse and easily cut through the carapace armor.

Taking the stone out he felt a weird sensation. The same will that had previously made him want to step over strong beings was forcing him to eat the stone. Dean frowned at the influence out of his control, it was even stronger now since he was holding what it wanted.

He ate the small stone in one gulp.

Dean didn't feel any different, the will had disappeared and no longer controlled Dean to act. He hurriedly tried to throw up, putting his fingers down his throat and trying to think of anything disgusting. It was pointless. He was an evolver and only now did he realise his body's hidden benefits. He didn't feel any urge to throw up and his enhanced mind controlled his calm towards disgusting things.

POP!

Dean stopped his actions and looked where he heard that sound. His senses were still active even in his dispret struggle so it was easy to find the noise origin with his focus now on his surroundings.

Inside the dense webbing where the widows previously rested. Numerous scattering sounds could be heard. Dean quickly grabbed widow's fury and got ready for battle.

Hundreds of spiderlings appeared from the resting area. They were like a dense wave that covered the surroundings. They moved through the rubble cause from the explosions and easily crawled in all directions. They were half a meter in size and would still be considered the largest spider in the world as to the goliath bird eater.

The baby spiders quickly spread out looking for food. They covered the corpses that had fallen from the explosions and begun feasting. There weren't enough corpses for all the spiders which caused them to eat the male black widow whose body was mutilated from his partner and Dean. Dean was protecting the female black widows corpse for now since he wanted to examine it and make more weapons.

He swung fury around, easily killing the spiderlings that came to close him. He wasn't using a gun as there could be a stone in one of the spiderlings. Although he was reluctant to find another stone which might make the will appear and make him eat it again, Dean still took the chance if he could examine what he had just ingested.

The spiderlings were in a frenzy of hunger. They rushed towards their mothers corpse hoping to satiate their desire. The corpses of their father and the other webbed up bodies had long been devoured by the numerous spiderlings.

'They can only attack with their fangs so I don't need to worry about their limbs like with the mother widow'

Dean had an ecstatic expression. His battle with the mother widow had taught him how to attack in a wild way, he was having fun getting to practice his new form of attacks this soon. He was also glad to be able to get used to using a proper weapon other than the dull spear and knife.

The spiderlings were decimated by Dean.

Blue blood covered the surroundings and numerous spider corpses were accurately pierced in their abdomen.

Eventually Dean had whittled the numbers down so that they could no longer swarm him. He was tired from having to kill so many spiders. At the beginning of the battle he had gone all out using his portals and attacking fiercely but after an hour he grew tired and decided to take a more resource efficient fighting style.

His attacks with widow's fury were now sharp and simple instead of the wild style he was practising in the beginning.

The spiderlings had managed to take a few chunks off their mothers body at the cost of having their siblings be massacred by Dean. They were no longer in the state of frenzy as before. The ones that survived were the ones that were able to satiate their hunger and could begin demonstrating intelligence unlike their frenzied siblings. They no longer rushed into battle and were instead watching Dean defend the corpse. Reluctantly they left, leaving to find other prey that was easier to kill.

SCREECH!

They scuttered into the distant webs to find prey that was caught and trapped. Dean could only watch as they left. The webs would make it hard for him to tail them and he was far too tired to keep fighting.

'Sigh..at least this should be plenty of materials to research'

After taking a short rest, Dean started to organise the corpses. He wanted to check the adult widow corpses first as they were more special.

Walking towards where he last remembered seeing the male widow corpse he scanned the area looking for it's remains. The spiderlings hadn't left any bit of flesh and cleanly devoured everything but the bones. Dean frowned looking at the bones.

'It's a human skull'

The male widow was a former human. Dean had been learning everything from the book Kim Hannah had left him. He could accurately tell that the skull of the spider was that of a human.

'He must've been a mutator'

"Haaa"

Dean sighed at his thoughts and could mostly infer what had happened. This man who mutated into a black widow and the female black widows mutation being similar to bug spray. The man had probably tried to kill the spider before it had the chance to mutate. The spider should've died but instead mutated with the ability to spray an acidic liquid, causing the man to mutate as a widow because he was in close proximity to it.

'And then you became her partner and couldn't even kill yourself unless she was finished with you'

Dean felt little to no sympathy for this man. This was the result of his own actions and his own power being weaker.

Dean walked towards the female black widow. He checked her skull to see if it was also human, it was not, further confirming his thoughts.

He then examined the rest of the bodies writing down his findings in the book Kim Hannah had given him. It was going to be his journal and had his findings about the mutated and his theories. Flipping through the pages about human anatomy, zombies and the stone giant he drew the spider and listed their qualities.

Dean had also checked the spiderlings if they too had a stone like the mother widow.

'Was the stone what let only her spray the liquid?'

None of the spiderlings were capable of that attack and would've surely tried using it instead of rushing Dean into close quarters.

Dean spent the night inside the dense webs. He had no reason to leave as it was safe and he needed to document everything. It was peaceful and quiet just like how Dean lived before the apocalypse.
