Sara - The Other Woman

“Mom, this is Sara.” Roy smiled as he walked Sara toward his mother.

Sara steeled herself as the woman continued to stare without saying a word. With a nod, the woman stepped back into the kitchen. Sara’s heart sank, and she quickly glanced at Roy. He gave her a reassuring wink.

“Mom’s not a talker.” He gave her arm gentle pressure and followed her into the kitchen.

The kitchen was large and made up the entire back of the house. A table to fit six was located in the middle of the room with the far wall housing the sink and cabinets. To the left was the stove, and to the right was the refrigerator. The wall closest to them as they entered held bins that appeared to hold dry goods.

“Sit down,” his mother ordered. Her voice was gravelly and deep. Edith, as Roy had told Sara his mother’s name was, moved to the stove where a large pot steamed.
