"You really gave them both a detention?" Steph asked as she climbed through the window of the old classroom. "I mean, you're always after Rachel, but Katie too?"
"If Katie apologized or even looked sorry, I might have let her go." Lilly said. Then she turned toward Steph. She had one hand fixed on the windowsill, and the other she pulled at her skirt. "Why are you just standing there, come over."
"B-But you said this was okay, I-I can stand here."
"I said that last week because you were refusing to step out of the window. Come on, Steph, don't be a baby."
"Please, Lilly, I'll – I'll be able to do it tomorrow."
"Really?" Lilly asked. "And what will you have tomorrow that you don't have today?"
"I-I…"
"Listen, Steph, you're a smart girl." Lilly began. "You know what's going to happen if I agree to delay this, don't you?"
Steph nodded. "I-I'll probably say the same thing tomorrow and try to keep putting it off."
"That's right, so be a good girl and come over here." Lilly patted the spot next to her.
Steph slowly moved her hands off the windowsill, and she began to use her two hands to try to balance. Lilly watched this with amusement.
Over the past week, she had grown attached to Steph in a way that she hadn't with anyone else before. Unlike Linda, Steph is unpredictable, and they often disagree and have heated debates about how the student council should be run. Lilly loved that part of Steph, but she also loved this sweet and vulnerable side that made you want to treasure her and keep her safe.
As she got to the halfway between the windowsill and Lilly, Steph's legs felt weak, and she fell forward onto her hands and knees.
"Steph!" Lilly ran over to Steph and helped her sit down. "Steph you're bleeding."
"It's only a little graze."
"You're clearly not in the right state of mind. Hold on, don't speak so much." Lilly put her hands to her mouth as she gagged and raced through the window and in a few minutes was back with a first aid kit.
"Lilly, you're not good with blood. Let me do it myself."
"Nonsense, old you to be quiet, didn't I? What kind of student council president can't look after a single student?" Lilly pushed Steph and put a hand on her forehead and then to her cheek, and then slipped it down her shirt.
"Stop, Lilly, your hand's really cold."
"What am I doing?" Lilly though catching herself. "I'm supposed to be treating her."
She pulled out her hand and poured some sanitizer on the wound, causing Steph to moan.
"Cold, cold, cold." She said as Lilly rubbed it on her knee.
Then Lilly took out a large plaster and placed it on Steph's knee and fell onto the roof with a sigh. "You should be more careful."
"Thanks for taking care of me, Lilly." Steph said, looking up from the plaster at Lilly with a smile. "You're a really good friend."
