Flowers don't work

Jake's pov

A long day had ended well with a good movie and seeing Sabrina's smile was my happiness. I was deep in slumber when I had a knock on the door, a man's voice. Not just any man, a man I still considered a friend but didn't consider me as one. Such irony! I opened the door and there he was with a face shifting from happiness to anger in a flash. "What are you doing here?" we asked simultaneously. Instead of answering each other, we were at each other's throats with fists, tumbling, kungfu, judo, and wrestling with no care in the world, just satisfying our enormous egos until we heard her voice, "Enough, you all get out of my house. Come back only when you have a replacement for the things you have broken!" I had never seen her so angry and if we stayed there another second, she was going to have our heads on a platter. Like children scolded by their mom, we rose up dusted ourselves and walked out with shame written all over our faces. On my way out I could not believe the mess we had created. A broken Tv, water glasses, a coffee table, spilled juice on the carpet, I was disappointed in ourselves. We were officially children.

Once we were outside, I realized, I had left my phone and car keys so I thought of going for it but I changed my mind for two reasons, one, she was going to kill me and two, I was so ashamed of my immature behavior. As I walked down the stairs, Marcus was hot on my trail asking, "Look what you have made me do. Sabbie will not forgive me, I have no place to stay, no money, no clothes, all my stuff are in that bag I have left at the door!"

"That's your problem, go back for them!" I shouted back.

"Seriously, so that she can kill me! I don't want to mess with an angry pregnant woman with hormones, she might even castrate me. I am going with you to your place and am not asking, requesting, or begging.", Marcus replied exasperated.

He had a point if any of us went back, she was going to kill us. Also, this was God's way of giving me a second chance with my friend and I was going to take it without wasting time. So we took a bus to my place and when we arrived, I rushed to the fridge to get a drink of cold water, as the kind of morning we had just had required such.

Once we were calm enough, Marcus began, "Why were you at Sabrina's after what you put her through and how did you find her?" So I calmly began to explain recent events and how we met at her workplace, how she collapsed and how I was taking care of her through the night until he ambushed me with punches, kungfu, and wrestling. All the while he listened, when I was done, he asked me, "What are your intentions with her? Because I swear if you hurt her again I will kill you with my bare hands and you know I will."

I understood his threat well and I knew he would implement it if I messed up. So I replied, "I know I messed up when I did not believe her innocence, I did not protect her as a man should the love of his life, I allowed her to be ashamed and embarrassed in front of the whole world and I want to fix that, I want to be there for her, to love her, to protect her. I just want a second chance to do everything for her and with her." When I was done, Marcus was giving me a brotherly hug.

"I know; you have suffered enough but don't screw this up. The first thing we have to do is to find a way to replace the things we broke, any ideas?" Marcus added.

"Before that, I have been meaning to ask, do you know if she dating or seeing someone? And who is the father to her child?" I asked.

"What I know is she isn't dating and also based on the fact that she is seven months pregnant and checking the timeline of events am afraid that the father of her child is your father from that fateful ordeal" Marcus replied sadly.

My heart sank at Marcus' words. I did not believe that she was such a good person that she chose to keep the pregnancy from a man who abused her, rather than aborting it. She really was an angel, only angels can do what she is doing. It was a truth that was all too difficult to bear at the moment. A truth that I had to hear from her own mouth to believe and know how to handle, but first I had to get on her good graces. Marcus suggested we take flowers to her so that she can allow us to take my phone and his bag but considering how it went the last time I took flowers to her, I was adamant that it wasn't going to work but we had to try.

When we arrived at her apartment flowers in hand, I suggested that Marcus be the first to knock on the door. She opened and with no good morning, no pleasantries, she said, "Where are my new tv, new table, and drinking glasses?"

"Well Sabrina you see we left my bag and his phone, so we thought that if we can have them, we will replace all the stuff we broke by evening. But first, receive these flowers as an apology", Marcus replied stammering because of the menacing look Sabrina gave, all the while as I stood beside him admiring Sabrina's beauty and how she scared me at this moment.
