Gramps had failed, as expected. But he was not dead yet. The Commandos managed to send him into hiding, deviating the future that I knew of by quite a lot. However, Gramp's location was only one of my concerns as I had yet to unravel quite a few secrets.
If I want, I can find his location… sorta. But as of now, I am in a pinch.
"What are these…"
I stood before a pile of notes and drawings with growing curiosity. With the continuous usage of pheromones, I managed to evolve my ability to the point of controlling a dozen people. And with that, I broke into Essex's lab, looking for answers.
However, the man I was searching for was already long gone. I expected it, but Essex still managed to be quicker than my estimates.
So, was that the reason I was shocked?
No. It was not.
Essex is a genius. He already figured that I would be back, looking for answers and as such, he hid quite a few notes in his study.
And I had one of those opened in my hand.
'*I do not know whether it is Max or Adam, but considering the changes in personality following the experiment… I am guessing it's Adam.*'
Essex is a terrifying person, and I am still not sure about his motives and or who he is allied with.
'*So, you must have a lot of questions… especially about the so-called 'X-Gene' don't you?*'
I did, and he knew it.
'*There is a lot that I cannot reveal, for reasons that you will understand soon enough. And in all honesty, it won't benefit me in any way. So, I am willing to share the bits that are safe to share and it will also help me in my theories.*'
There is no reason for him to risk his discoveries for a random kid. Makes sense.
'*Since, you are a part of this theory… I cannot just let you die. Not yet.*'
Turning the page around, I saw a lot of pictures. Pictures about evolution of humans.
'*The X-Gene is a set that is not present in every human, however in those that it is present —are often termed as the evolution of humans, or a step-up. The genes awaken during adolescence however it might not awaken in some. And the experiment that I commenced, awakened both your and Max's X-Genes.*'
Interesting.
'*The upper limit of the X-Gene's power is not yet known. A human can become a god with the awakening of their X-Gene or they might explode once the gene awakens, you might never know.*'
That sent a shiver down my spine as the possibility of randomly exploding was not something that I would have liked.
'*Luckily the two of you obtained something incredibly good and that put my plans back on track. Now, there is something that might interest you.*'
Oh.
'*It is said that there is a stage ahead of the usual X-Gene awakening, a stage which is another step-up. And that is also a part of the experiment that I hope one of you achieves, the project Homo Supreme.*'
It was already surprising that there was a stage above the current one, but for it to be called Homo Supreme… that's a lot.
'*And since you are already in my study.*' The page continuing that phrase was empty, and this made me curious. Turning the pages around, I found his final message. '*Look into Hitler's study. You will be surprised.*'
Below that was a warning and an instruction. '*Make sure that Hate-Monger does not survive.*'
I planned to break into Gramp's study one way or the other. The secrets he hid, especially in this version of the timeline… would be gold.
…
…
There was blood, and then there was me. Both red.
Without lifting an arm, I managed to slaughter the entire guard cell and all it took was a single command.
Ordering the soldiers to move aside, I walked into Gramp's office. Already aware that he had escaped.
As I entered the office, I noticed that most of the documents had either been destroyed or taken away. But I also knew that he kept his most important folders in a certain location.
Pushing the table away, I ordered the minions to lift the tiles off the floor. And once they followed my command, a secret tunnel was revealed.
The tunnel was narrow and barely lit, most people would be too afraid to enter it.
But not me.
I had already been there.
Ordering the men to stay behind, I entered the room —avoiding the traps that I knew about and using my experience to spot the ones I didn't know of.
Inside the tunnel was a room, a basement filled with multiple test subjects —animals, reptiles, birds and Jews.
Without paying them any heed, I walked towards the place that I knew would be worth more than a kingdom of gold —his secret file stash.
Ramming through the old shelves, I went directly towards the black shelf at the far back. All the books on that shelf were organised according to their colours— green, blue, yellow, orange, red and black.
Green contained information about the routes to uncharted places rich in coal, oil, gold, diamonds and other precious items.
Blue contained information about the past and present leaders. Their secrets and their weaknesses.
Yellow contained locations of the nuclear weapons… of almost all nations.
Orange contained information about his experiments and the ways they could help someone. This included serums to make people stronger.
The next one was supposed to be gold… at least in my previous timeline and it had ways he could rule the world.
But this time, I was before a red and a black book.
Opening the red one, I was left speechless.
It was a book on science… and not 'just science' but the science from movies.
Ways to make a person invisible.
Ways to turn a person into a telepath.
Ways to make a person immortal.
There were countless formulae and theories written next to it. But that made me wonder if he had all these then why didn't he use them?
Something to look into later.
With my shaky hands, I picked up the black book with the thought that nothing can be more shocking than this.
Oh, how wrong I was.
The first words inside the book read—
"Magic."
