Reunion

We emerged from the tunnel into a cave. The closer we got to the other end, the colder we got, so as soon as we arrived, we took down our packs and put on our jackets.

There was sunlight streaming in from the cave opening. I carefully looked around, looking for familiar signs and features.

"So is this the same cave?" Jacob asked.

"I think so, but it's been a little over four years since then."

Jacob's eyes narrowed. He seemed angry.

"What is it?" I asked.

"I was just thinking about how you were waiting here to die while those pieces of garbage were chasing you."

"Well, I didn't. I'm here with you now."

"But not because of any kindness or mercy from them."

I moved to the mouth of the cave and looked outside. The view was much the same as I'd remembered, although it was hard to say if that was because it was the same view, or because everything looked the same everywhere.
