Traveling

Although our clothes might appear normal at first glance, there were many oddities about our appearance, such as our shoes, our backpacks, our jackets, our hats, and Jacob's face. These oddities might cause some people to shy away from us, but for others, they would mark us as an easy, and possibly lucrative target. It was for this reason that I maintained my human disguise even when we were far from William's village. I was no longer worried about the mob murdering me, but about Jacob's safety. If a brigand saw a lone man walking around with a slave, he'd likely kill the man to steal the slave, especially if she was collared. As a domestic slave I was worth a few hundred gold, although I knew that I was good-looking enough to be sold as a pleasure-slave, which would multiply my value. It wasn't conceit on my part, but simply recognizing the practical reality.
