Gaining Tools
In the underground portion of the nest, there is a certain part of it where everyone hears loud bangs like someone is smashing metal against metal.

If you were to zoom farther in you could see a red worm with a block of metal on his...head?

"Phew, this sure is a workout, I'm almost done with the finished product though, hehe, just a couple more hits there." BANG, BANG, BANG! "And a couple more hits there." BANG, BANG BANG! "It's perfect, I call it...Well I guess the mother tree calls it, the pickaxe, it's beautiful, with this our metal production with metal will go through the roof and then I can make better tools for my work and then I can make more pickaxes, and its a cycle, until we start making those tools of course. I need to find a wife so we can make more intelligent babies."
"Alright, I'm gonna distribute this and start this 'mining' operation."
The red worm then walked out of his room with a pickaxe attached to his head, he then started walking towards the construction worker's main area to find a worm the could fit the job. After searching for a bit he found the perfect test subj- no the perfect colleague.
"Hey dude over here, I'm the red worm and I need your help with something that could change us worms forever."
"Huh? WHAT! you're the red worm, wow, you're more scrawny than I thought. Alright, so what do you need my help with?"
"You see this thing on my head? It's called a 'pickaxe' we can use it to 'mine' more metals so I can use them to make other things including more of these I want you to be the first one", he said this with a very convincing smile.
"I guess if it helps the mother tree and us worms ill do it. What do I need to do?"
The worm then gave a demonstration of how the pickaxe works to the worm and told him the mining area he picked out for this operation and he got to work. After that, the red worm could only wait because he used up all of the remaining metal with that one pickaxe.

A couple of days later while the red worm was resting in his room he heard someone calling out to him.
"Red worm, red worm, are you there?"
"Uh, coming."
He walked up to the entrance and a familiar worm came into view.
"The construction worker? Why are you here I thought you were mining for some metals?"
"Well I was, until after a day of work I hit a huge vein of metal, and I started to mine it and well, short story short, I got a shit ton of metal."
At that moment, ten worm-sized wheel barrels came into view filled to the brim with metal and it took the red worm by surprise.
"HOLY SHIT, this mining method is a lot more effective than I thought, I'm gonna get back to working right away. You should continue, take this as your new job for now on because shortly there is gonna be a lot more worms working with you."
"Sure thing, I kind of like mining anyway."

Back at the red worm's workplace.

"Well that's another pickaxe ill give this to another worm, I've collected enough materials now it's time to begin the second creation."
The worm then put the huge chunk of metal into the makeshift furnace to heat it, after heating it he takes out of the furnace and starts using his other head tool, and starts to hold the anvil, he then starts to shape the piece of metal and before it gets cold he puts it back into the furnace and starts to shape it again after finishing the piece of metal, he then starts another chunk of metal and repeats the process, he does this to a lot of other chunks and after a straight 34 hours of working he started making huge iron balls, after finishing that he then started putting together the pieces of metal with a sticky solution after a couple of hours of carefully putting together pieces he finished the piece of work.
"It's beautiful, my first real piece of art, in mother tree's words its called... A cannon."
