It's a Heartless Life for Me

The sound of feet hitting the ground at a fast pace echoes through the alley as Will turns a corner and tries to hide behind a dumpster.

He clasps his hand over his mouth to stifle his breathing and he hears the sound of his pursuer entering the alley not long after he finishes hiding. 'C'mon, go away!' He hopes in his mind.

Breathless seconds pass before Will hears his pursuer slink away further down the alley. Even when he can't hear the creature anymore, he holds his breath until he absolutely can't anymore.

"Haaah..." he lets out his held breath before greedily sucking air. 'What the hell is going on today?'

The day had began like any normal one for Will. Going to work at his shitty job, getting yelled at by his boss, watching a black hole form in the sky that is sucking everything into it while it also spits out weird monsters. Well, that last bit wasn't part of the usual routine.

Will had barely made it out of the store he worked at alive before everyone else he knew was torn to shreds by the creatures.

"At least I made it out, though what am I going to do now?" he asks himself, leaning back against the alley wall.

While pondering his near future, Will feels something grab his ankle. "Oh fu-" is all he manages to get out before another hand reaches out of a shadow on the ground and hits him in the chest.

Something is ripped out of him by the creature. Glowing yellow eyes are all he can see before a bright light envelops Will before everything fades from view.

Almost everything, a bright screen appears in front of him.

Mockingly, it tells him, [Game Over, your heart was stolen!]

Before he can think of a response to that, the original text is replaced with even more.

[Congratulations! You have awakened the Heartless System! Not to be confused with a heartless System, the Heartless System's purpose is to help its user in the event that they are turned into a Heartless. Would you like to accept assistance from the Heartless System?]

[Yes][No]

Will sat for a moment, or whatever can be called sitting when you don't have any perceivable body. 'So I've been "turned into a Heartless"? What does... Wait a minute, giant black hole in the sky, shadow creatures indiscriminately attacking people, glowing yellow eyes... Is this related to the Kingdom Hearts games?'

He hadn't played them in a few years, not since the third game had come out, but Will was slowly remembering bits and pieces of the games he had loved in his childhood. 'Fuuuuuuck, the Kingdom Hearts Universe is brutal if you don't have plot armor. Which I might have now with this system.'

Coming back around to the system prompt, the screen being the only thing in existence around him, Will considers his options. 'I could press "yes", making me a Heartless. I'd be a monster, though most of them get special abilities. Depending on the type I could be effectively immortal though, I think Heartless that get destroyed just re-complete back into a regular person after a while? My other option is to pick "no" and just die.... That isn't really a choice.'

Will attempts to press yes with his hands, but finding his lack of hands tries to speak it instead. No sound comes out, but the prompt changes regardless.
