The smell is awful, like disinfectant.

It hurts so much that each breath is agony.

Karen slowly opened his eyes. The sunlight was too dazzling, so he had to close them again.

After a long while, as Karen gradually adapted to the brightness, he tried to open his eyes again.

He saw the white sheets, the white quilt, and the blue and white striped patient gown he was wearing, and Mina, his cousin, sitting beside his bed doing her homework.

Mina seemed to sense something and turned her head to look at Karen. When Mina saw his open eyes, she immediately covered her mouth, tears streaming from her eyes.

Mina kicked her brother Rent, who was also writing his homework, and he flipped over sideways.

"Karen is awake. Karen is awake. Rent, go get the doctor. Go!"
