Scene 2

SCENE 2

EXT. In front of Gale's house.

Gale Hughes looks at his car. An old rusted car. It has the flat tire on the left front wheel. Gale sees that the car goes down on that side.

Gale Hughes

(looking at the sky)

No... fucking day.

He looks at the clock. He is late.

He puts his jacket on the car and begins to rummage for some tools to change the tire.

He finds what he needs, undoes the studs and he lifts the car with the jack. He tries to remove the wheel but with no use.

He lies under the car and sees that something keeps the wheel blocked.

He tries to get out, but right when he turns his face to the road so he can get out, a car comes and it passes through pond splashing water over it, including over his body... Including over his face and even in his mouth.

He jumps up.

Gale Hughes

(looking at the sky)

You, shit... fucking day!

He spits and then he wipes his face and his clothes.

He is all wet.

Somebody approaches.

Debbie Edwards

(she wears huge eye glasses, having some solder paste over them. She wears an unsightly fur cap and a gray dress. Her skirt is dirty of something white, and her jacket is torn and wet)

Hi, Gale. We meet again...

Debbie Edwards is with her 8 year-old daughter, Carrie.

Gale Hughes

(whispering)

Unfortunately...

Debbie Edwards

I'm sorry... I can't hear...

Nothing... Hi, Deborah. Hi, Carrie...

Debbie Edwards

It's Debbie...

Gale Hughes

Where... and who is Debbie?

Debbie Edwards

(smiling)

No, Gale. My name is Debbie. Not Deborah...

Gale Hughes

Oh... ok...

Gale looks at Debbie and he raises his eyebrows.

Debbie Edwards

(explains herself)

We're painting the house. And all our things are in bags, wardrobes... and can't get access to them... so...

But Gale doesn't hear her. He looks at Carrie. He smiles at her.

Gale Hughes

You know, Carrie... that a flower loves other flowers. Hope you'll like my present for you.

And Gale makes a flower appear from his sleeve.

The girl smiles at him.

Carrie Edwards

(a lovely child, better dressed than her mother. She wears a blue uniform with white shirt)

Thank you for helping me with my bike, Gale...

Gale Hughes

You're welcome... little Angel.

The man looks again at the woman.

Debbie Edwards

(smiling)

Thank you for being so nice with Carrie... We...

The woman sees that the man stares at her wet jacket.

Debbie Edwards

(smiling)

It was Mike who did this...

Gale Hughes

Oh, God. You have a boyfriend... Pour guy...

Debbie Edwards

(smiling)

No... it's my dog...

Gale Hughes

Of course... Who could really look at such...

But his words are cut off by someone.

Robbie Robinson

(A fat man. He is Gale's best friend)

Who could really look at such... goddess? Because he could become blind.

Debbie feels more beautiful when she hears that. But Gale... doesn't understand why his friend speaks like that.

Gale Hughes

But... No offense, Debbie... but you are...

And Gale gets a punch into his stomach from Robbie and stops talking.

Robbie Robinson

No offense, Debbie... but you are so beautiful that we must... goggle at you. Like wolves... looking at their pray.

And he gives another punch to his friend Gale.

Debbie Edwards

(smiling with her face as red as a tomato)

Hi, Robbie.

Robbie Robinson

Hi, beautiful ... princess.

It's obvious that the woman feels embarrassed from so many compliments.

Debbie Edwards

I have to go now... So... Robbie.

She greets him.

Debbie Edwards

(smiling)

I wish you to have a rainbow over your head all your day... Gale.

And the woman leaves.

Gale Hughes

I wish you... to be beautiful, not to look like a scarecr...

But he gets another punch into his stomach.

Gale Hughes

(to his friend, Robbie)

Are you trying to break something in me... Why don't you punch me in my head with something? So you could kill me...

Robbie Robinson

First of all. You get nothing inside your head. It's empty there... Something already dead like your brain couldn't be killed. Because it's dead...

Gale looks at Robbie and nods his head.

Gale Hughes

(to his friend, Robbie)

And you say you are my friend...

Robbie Robinson

I am... I'm your only friend. Even your mother is not your friend. She is the master and you're her slave. And secondly... You can't tell to a woman that she is... not so... beautiful. Try to speak with them like you speak with children...

Gale Hughes

But she is so ugly... She is like a bat with...

Robbie Robinson

See... that's what I'm talking about. Your empty head. You can't speak like this. Why are you speaking like this...?

Gale Hughes

I can't lie. It's what I'm thinking at that moment... the truth and...

Robbie Robinson

Enough... Man, how many times do I have to tell you that you must speak indirectly about such subjects. Like women's... beauty.

Gale turns up his nose.

Gale Hughes

You want me to lie...?

Robbie Robinson

Yes, empty head... She likes you very much... so much that she didn't hear your shit about what you think about her. So try to be cute... To be nicer with her.

Gale Hughes

You want me to lie...? My friend wants me to become a liar?

Robbie looks at his friend and sighs.

Robbie Robinson

You have no cure... Let's go to work. We've been too late. We'll go in my car, because I see that yours looks just like you. Old and rusted...

The two men get into Robbie's car and leave.
