Chapter 13: Chameleon Kerfuffle

(Carter POV)

"From what I've gathered, the girl that robbed us isn't any old reptile." I said when we all meet back at the ship. "She's a chameleon. That's how I lost her so quickly.". Niki then said "My mother usually uses fish that can camouflage for spy and assassination missions so I had to be able to spot them easily.". Zira smiled and then said "So with the boots on your side then you should be able to catch her easily!".

She was back again. This time with me and Niki it was easier to follow her. Once she was cornered she smiled and said "Well well well! Look which cat turned up this time, I think we should be properly introduced. I'm May, and I guess you're prepared if you're going to bring a lion fish with you.". Her tail was green now, which I assume is her natural color. "It's a real shame you brought a fish to a wolf fight." She said smirking.

.... Wolf? I then see what she meant as I'm tackled by a boy with silver hair and bright blue eyes, and he was 5'10, wearing blue jeans, and had on a gray shirt and jacket. He helps her up and says in a slight raspy voice "May.... I thought I told you not to mingle with the good guys.". She smiled at him and said "I only needed help with the cat guy! And you're a wolf so I figured....".

He looks at my and two silver wolf ears and a tail appear on him. His ears go down and he glares at me and says "You can handle the fish right? I'll handle pest control!". I take that as my sign to leave and start running. I try speeding up but god is this guy- "FUCK!" I say as I get pinned down and he looks in my eyes growling at me.

I.... Am going to kill this guy.... "Ace! Let's go!" I heard May say as they both leave. Before going Ace said "Back off kid, you have no Idea who you're messing with!".

"NO!" Zira told me after we got back. "Zira we really need Niki-" She glared at me and said "My girlfriend got hurt because of yo-" "ZIRA!". We both turned to see Niki get up. "I've had worse bruises, so don't mess with him about it! Also.... I didn't use my weapon because I didn't want to hurt them too bad.". Zira calmed down when June spoke up.

"Wait.... Did you say them?!". I looked at him and nodded. "Yeah, now she has a wolf working with her!". We all paused at that and Zira stood up. "Tomorrow me and June will go with you.".

AGAIN we were pursuing her. This time when the wolf came out, June and Zira pinned him. "FUCK! May!" He said as the middle scale under her eyes turned purple. "Guys, I really think you should let us go! You've beat us already so letting us go-" She stopped as they both turned. I did the same myself as we heard a sound similar to blades being dragged across the ground.

We turn to see a tall, burly man who was the literal definition of 'fuck-around-and-find-out'. He said in a Russian accent to us "So these are the dirt bags that have been giving you trouble?". He was actually 7 feet tall so he shouldn't be talking. He had brown hair that was slicked back, he was a bit chunky, brown eyes, sharp teeth, and he was wearing an outfit that made him look like her was part of the mafia with tan skin.

"B- boss we can explain-" He glared at Ace and turned to us. "You want your stuff back, no? Well I'll tell you this: MY group, MY work, MY stuff, and MY money! Does that spell it out for you?". Zira got fed up and said "Well in that case your sorry group here hurt my girlfriend!". He stared at her and said "Stay away from me then.". I knew what he was about to say and made a mental note to let Zira kill him. "Why?!" She yelled at him.

He made a toothy grin and said words I know he'll regret. "I don't touch the gays.". Zira's eye twitched and stood still for a few seconds. She then spread her wings and burst forward. I saw her punch him in the face and dust filled the air. "You did it Z-" June stopped talking with a horrified look. I turn to look and I'm filled with fear.

Zira's fist was still connected to his face.... But he barely moved an inch. A forked tongue flicked as her and he said "I EAT BIRDS LIKE YOU FOR BREAKFAST!!!!". His nails extended into sickle shaped claws, and a large tail came from behind him. He grabbed Zira and threw her to the ground. "I got this!" I hear June said as he brings out his sword. He slices at him but we all hear a clang.

"So it's YOU who has the sword! This makes things interesting!". When the smoke clears we see a scythe radiating black energy and a huge blade. "You- you have-" June struggles to say. "YES! I have the scythe from the legends! Now get out of my town, and if I see you again I'll have you're heads on my wall!". We all started running immediately and all knew how bad this just became.

While the others ran away I hanged back a bit and watched. "Boss-" May says as he grabs her forearm squeezing it. "This was not your job! Go against my orders again and I'll personally break you in two.". He let her go and said "Get back to base NOW!".

Everyone looked at me and I said "I can't believe I'm saying this but.... We might have to let this one go.". Niki nodded and said "We can just move by ground for now Zira, and I know you hate being restricted like this so I'd really appreciate if you would-". She's stopped as Zira says in a quiet voice "June.... You saw it too, didn't you?". They lock eyes and June said "We are dealing with something worse than the usual.... A Komodo Dragon.".

I look at them and say "I thought it was just me. So what's with you two's reactions?". June stands up, runs, and then fly's away. We could all see the sorrow and pain on his face. "A dragon.... Is what took June's father....". Niki and I look away knowing that this must be painful for him. "June's father was a good man. One day when he left for business on a trip to scales.... He didn't come back. The evidence suggested that he was poisoned by a komodo dragon.".

Niki looks at her and says "That's horrible! Is that why he was so shocked?!". Zira nodded and said "And the fact he has a legendary weapon just made it worse. Those weapons bond is permanent from what we've seen. And if we have to constantly deal with him then there is no point, or we'll die.... Which is why I'll get June and be the first to say it.". She then gives Niki her gloves and says the words we all knew were coming eventually:

"We have to abandon the scythe.".
