Master’s Best Friend

[ Jason Winters ]

Another failed run... I sighed, sitting on my bunker, looking at the bed above me. I always had to take the bottom bunker cause Moe-chan always beats me in arguments; with a punch to the face.

"How should I do this thing... Tsujii is not a suspect but... He's the only one who had witnessed something about the cube at least. And the Gears... We knew nothing about them. They just appeared 2 months ago and they are already one of the best terrorist organizations in the world...." I thought to myself.

Nothing came to my mind. I just sat there silently, thinking about what their targets were. If we knew that, we could manage to find the truth behind all this terrorism.

From what I knew, for now, I knew that the higher-ups were already in on this. Why were they silent after all this terrorism? What were they hiding? What are they scared of?

Millions of questions are left unanswered. And yet, I was the one who was given to root out the Glitch. One way or another... I'm going to do it.

'What does the captain have to say about this Glitch? Reminds me... I never asked him anything about the Glitch...'

I got up from my bunker thinking about this. I was wearing a plain blue t-shirt and some jeans. I got off the bunker and started to walk to the door.

Moe-chan wasn't there with me. Takata sensei sent her to Miyohu for another mission. Some Animangi were running wild in the streets.

She was sent with some of our squad to take them out.

I got the jacket hung on the edge of my chair and left the room shortly. (Not the Red Ring...)

With the new missions going on, everyone was busy. Rings were running all around the place, finding clues and stuff. But we, in the 27th squad, had no worries though.

We were the ones who solved the cases right on time, but... This time I'm the leader and the Glitch is with the Gears who are impossible to find... I didn't know what I was going to do.

Passing through the long corridors, I finally managed to reach Takata sensei's office.

"Sensei... Can I come in?" I asked with a knock on the door.

"Come in!"

His voice always thundered... For no reason even. So a shiver ran down the spine of every person who came close to this guy.

I opened the door and went in. The guy was sitting on his desk, fingers crossed. He must've been thinking about something heavily. That's what I saw from the outside at least.

"Oh, Jason... Take a seat," he waved his arm.

Unlike any other day, there weren't many case files lying on his desk. It was just him, thinking. I took a seat in front of his desk.

The office always was the place you get frightened to death. But today, he didn't call out for me, I did.

"Well, what may be the matter today, Captain?" he asked from me. I narrowed my eyes and looked into his.

"Not one... A lot. Since you put me in charge of this case, can you tell me if there are any suspicious activities within the country related to this? Something tells me that there might be something going on within our laboratories..."

I spoke my mind to him. He went silent the moment he heard this... And I just confirmed my theory.

"You... Don't dig the Government matters. The only thing we need to do is find the Glitch... And I almost forgot to tell you... Alive."

He paused. I looked at his pale old face. He was always an angry-looking man. Large eyebrows, grey hair, pale old face, and immensely tall.

"Hmm... If you say so, Sensei. But remember, if the higher-ups are involved in the case, the terrorists will target to reveal it to the public..." I said to him as I stood up from the chair.

Then, I turned to take my leave. This guy won't be giving up any information about the Glitch, anyway. I had to dig in by myself.

"Jason! Wait..." he stopped me before I walked out of the office.

"Yes?"

"Your master... Neon. He was my best friend. He told me that you had a potential he hadn't seen in anyone before. Don't think of the leadership I gave you as a punishment... It is merely a gift. And he also told me... To protect you from our shadows... Remember that."

Master? Did master tell me to get the leadership? And... What shadows. I never knew that Takata sensei was Master's best friend!

So many secrets are revealed within a simple set of words. What are the shadows? Our shadows?

I instantly wondered. But he warned me not to go after the Government. And there is always one rule... When an elder tells us not to do something, do we not do it? We do not obey, do we? So why should I?

"Thank you for telling me that, Sensei. I'll be taking my leave now," I walked out of the office and the door closed behind me.

I was totally shocked. How would Master be his best friend? I never even knew that.

But now I doubted something. If he were really Master's best friend... He might know something about his mysterious death.

I clenched my fist just thinking about it. I swore to get revenge for Master, but I couldn't even get to the edge of that case.

"ALERT! ALERT! EMERGENCY MEETING! ALL RINGS REPORT TO THE COUNCIL!"

An announcement roared through the corridors.

'An emergency meeting? Right now? Who the fuck is setting up an emergency meeting at 10 pm in the night?'

All the Rings started to hurry to the Council. The emergency meeting meant that all the squads had reported back to the base, which means Moe-chan is here.

I hurried to the Council too.

The Council was the place where higher-ups made announcements to us. They talked about all sorts of things related to national security. Thus, one of them was here.

I couldn't wait to hear what the higher up had to say to us. This might give me a simple clue to the Glitch... At least.
