I met Aaron outside the HQ where he's back is leaning at the car while his eyes sparkle as he watches the stars.
"Wow, they're pretty," I exclaimed, joining his admiration at the twinkling sky. He nodded and averted his eyes on me.
"I will just drop you off at your dorm but I have to go back here immediately. I have things to do." Somehow that news disappointed me. Right when I was about to declare this day a mission accomplished because so far nothing bad happened yet. He opened the door for me and went to the driver's seat.
"I met Stif a while ago. She helped me tick my mind," I informed him.
"Yeah. We met." He started the car's engine and started to drive. I nodded and had no idea what to say next. He seems to hate small talk as much as he hates smiling at me. Then something strange struck me.
"What's that?" I asked as if Aaron would hear what I just heard.
"Ha?" he looked at me then back at the road. Then suddenly the road quake beneath us. Aaron drove faster when he realized that someone was following us.
"What was that?" I asked him.
"Telekinesis like mine." It's not the ground that quaked but it was our car. The road barricades started to move after us trying to block a car behind us. I looked behind us and saw Lieutenant Henry driving the military jeep and another person on the passenger's seat.
"This day is definitely one of those days where bad luck visits me." I breathed.
Aaron drove faster away from the highway and in a different direction from where we were supposed to go.
"Aaron, don't go there. I hear another military truck over there."
Aaron followed me and avoided the other road. There are now two military jeeps following us.
"Maybe if we get to a tollgate they'll stop following us? They're basically trucks and our car is not. They won't be able to pass that gate. They have to pass on the other side," I suggested.
"Worth a try." Aaron gritted his teeth. We reached a tollgate and Aaron immediately paid the pass and continued driving. No car was behind us anymore except civilian cars.
I sighed. But that's weird; I still hear a truck tailing us. I looked behind once again to make sure. If the military jeep saw us passing a tollgate they should have stopped by now but from what I'm hearing they didn't and are definitely near us.
"Aaron, the jeeps are gone right?"
"Hope so."
"But I still hear trucks…and it's really really loud. Like it's still behind us."
His eyes sharpened thinking of something and when he realized something he muttered a curse and turned a turn.
"Why?" I asked.
"They got an illusionist with them. Someone that could lie to our minds by showing or sending images that shouldn't be there." He explained.
"They were able to enter yours?" I was surprised because I thought he had a strong barrier.
"The barriers we have are only barriers strong enough to block telepathy, not mind controls."
"Don't you know how to create a stronger barrier then?"
"Not my talent. I'm not a shield like Ulysses."
"Oh, we're doomed?"
"Unless you make good use of those ears of yours, we're not." He continued to turn trying to lose the jeeps by making a turn whenever he got a chance.
I closed my eyes, finding the noise made by the jeep's engines. "They're at least ten meters far from us," I said. I felt the car taking another turn. "They are on the other street. Don't turn left." I felt the car turn to the right. I hear them murmuring something but in a language I don't understand. "Is Lieutenant Henry Russian?" I asked.
"Don't call him Lieutenant and yes."
"They're ranting about something but I can't understand. But the other car's passengers are speaking in English. They said something about handing me to their boss and being trampled." At the end of my sentence, I felt Aaron's anger. I can no longer feel the road beneath us due to the speed he's driving.
"We need to go back to the HQ. You're safer there."
"No, they want us to drag them there."
"No worries, the HQ has a number of Artisans."
"I'm serious. I think they're talking about entering the facility and taking it over. Don't sacrifice your HQ for someone like me. I'm not worth the sacrifice." I felt his eyes on me but I didn't look back.
"But…tsk…where do I bring you then?" he can't risk the HQ of course. I don't want him either anyway.
"Back to the dorm. I'm pretty sure they don't want to make a ruckus at a university."
"What?" his voice sounded surprised.
"Plus, I think you lost them already. The noise I'm hearing is not that near anymore. They stopped the chase." I massaged my temple from the little ache I got from focusing. Surprisingly, it wasn't as painful as before. Wow, Stif was really a huge help.
Aaron stopped the car at the side of the road while cars passed by us, "Are you crazy? Just like that? Go back to your dorm?" he's now mad.
"That's the only place I could go to now. I can't go to Jo's or Ven's. I'll only bring danger to them."
"What about your house? The actual home."
"I'm an international student, Aaron. I don't actually live here. Plus, there are guards in front of the dormitory. It's fine. Just don't bring me to your HQ."
"This is crazy." He hit the wheel. "Fine, back to your dorm. But, I'll stay."
"No, you said that you've got something to do. I'm fine. Plus, it's Alex's wedding tomorrow. I'm pretty sure they won't follow me there."
"What makes you sure about all these?" he asked angrily.
"My guts."
He looked at me, "Crazy, really." He turned the car around, leading the way to my dorm.
