Chapter 14

We sat in silence the first minutes of the ride until Christopher spoke up.

"So what are you doing exactly?"

"I'm going to hang out with a friend. A friend from school. We're pretty close I guess."

"That's good. It's good to be close to someone."

He was right. In all the chaos of what happened a year ago drew was there for me the whole time.

We drove the rest of the way in silence making things a little awkward. But I didn't know what else to talk about. he wanted to get to know me and yet I wasn't talking.

Before I knew it we were already at the coffee shop. i felt bad for not saying anything. But he didn't say anything either so it wasn't completely my fault.

"Here we are," he said parking the car. He looked at me and smiled. "Don't want to keep your friend waiting."

I nodded my head and got out of the car.

"Thanks for taking taking me."

"No problem. Want me to pick you up?"

"No I'm good. I'll just walk home with my friend."

He smiled again at me and nodded his head. "Okay. Then see you later.'

I smiled back at him and closed the door. I walked up to the coffee shop door but before I could open it I felt someone hug me. I felt the familiar yet foreign arms around me and quickly pulled them off.

"Very funny Drew."

I turned around and folded my arms before really looking up and seeing who hugged me from behind.

It was Christopher.

My arms fell to my sides and I quickly tried to apologize.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were-"

"Drew. Is he your so called friend?"

His voice sounded harsh. like he was hurt and betrayed.

"He's," I paused, "He's my-"

Then as if to make things worse drew came up and put an arm around me and pulled me close.

"Hey, missed me?"

I looked at him and gave him my death stare trying to tell him he just ruined things.

Christopher's expression didn't really change. It was blank with a hint of anger. But he didn't show that anger. He stayed cool, unlike his brothers.

"I see how it is."

"Wait you don't really understand, trust me."

I was trying my best to make him understand. he was probably reading things wrong.

I pushed Drew's arm off and walked up to Christopher.

"He's just a big idiot. He doesn't know what he's doing half of the time."

I knew that would hurt his feelings but drew and I could make up. Christopher, though, I didn't really know if I could. And he was the closest thing I would have to my brother. I couldn't loose him.

I looked into his sad, blue eyes really feeling bad for what he saw. But why was he so hurt? Was he really like his brothers? Were they all really connected like that?

"Christopher I-'

"I said I get it."

There was a pause of silence. I could feel even Drew was anxious but mostly confused.

"I've got to go. Have fun with your friend."

He walked off to his car and slammed the door shut. he started the car and drove off letting the wheels screech on the road.

I felt my head drop in disappointment but I didn't know why. I wanted to keep him close. Was that the reason? Did I somehow seem to fail?

Drew's voice sounded out my heavy thoughts bringing me back to the real world.

"Um... Samantha? Is everything all right?"

I turned back to him and forced a smile pushing everything away.

"Yeah let's just forget what happened and have fun."

Drew smiled back but it looked kind of hesitant and forced like mine.

"Sure."
