Chapter 43

A Humble Background

Adebayo’s house like most of the houses in Lagelu, have meager sunshades. His rectangular-shaped house had only four rooms, roofed with corrugated zinc sheets. The roof was perpendicular with the wall, leaving no shade for the sun at all. This was so because he had no enough money to buy extra zinc roof sheets to create shades around the house. Only the village head’s palace and very few farmers ‘houses had shades for resting in sunny afternoons.

Adrian’s grandfather, Adegbola, had built the house many years ago before he joined his ancestors. He was among few farmers who were the first to use the modern zinc roof sheets in Lagelu. Before that, thatch roofs were common and in vogue. Only the cities or towns like Iddo had buildings with zinc roofs. Adegbola during his lifetime, had taken one room, and given one each to his three wives, including Adebayo’s mother, Abeni.
