Some Scars Don’t Fade

Jay's POV:

We were all sitting around the dining table, casually talking, but I couldn't help noticing how off Jacob was acting. He barely spoke, kept staring down, and his whole vibe was just... off. At first, I thought maybe he was feeling shy around new people, but that couldn't be it. Jacob's never had that problem not with me, not with anyone. Something felt different.

And as if things weren't weird enough, we heard a knock on the door. Aidan got up to check, and the second he opened it, I heard a familiar voice Chase.

Before I could even react, Jacob literally bolted from the table straight to the bathroom. No words, no glance, nothing.

He just ran. And I knew right away this had nothing to do with food or stomach problems. Something was seriously wrong, and I needed him to tell me what it was.

Chase's POV:

Mom came back home late from work, which was nothing new, and while she was cooking, she realized we were out of salt. Classic. So, she asked me to go borrow some from the neighbors Jay and Aidan. They're just next door, so I didn't mind.

I knocked, and Aidan opened the door. We were chatting casually when I noticed someone rushing past inside from the kitchen straight to the bathroom. The guy wasn't Jay too tall for that.

"New roommate?" I blurted without even thinking. Normally, I wouldn't care, but this time... something felt off.

Aidan shrugged, "Oh no, that's just Jay's friend Jacob." He told me to come in while he grabbed the salt. But the second I heard that name, my body froze. Jacob? That name. That face that flashed for a second... could it really be him?

I didn't move. Couldn't move. Just stood there staring, trying to pull myself together while my mind spiraled.

Seconds later, Jay appeared, eyebrows raised, "Why're you standing there like a statue?"

I forced a small smile, trying to act normal, "Nothing uh, I'll just grab the salt and go. No need to come in." Before he could say anything else, Aidan was back, handing me the salt. I took it fast and waved goodbye, heart racing, eager to get the hell out.

Jay's POV:

"What's up with him? He was totally normal when he came in," Aidan said, breaking the silence once Chase left.

And for once, I had to agree. Chase isn't the type to act weird over nothing. But what's crazier is that Jacob came strolling back from the bathroom the second the door slammed shut.

"You good, Jacob?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

"Yeah, don't worry. I'm fine. So, uh... where were we?" Typical deflection. He plastered on a smile and jumped back into random conversation like nothing happened.

But that was the thing something did happen. I just didn't know what it was.

Sissel's POV:

I was lying on my bed, lost in my own world, when Chase burst into my room, whisper-yelling like a maniac.

"Do you know any of Jay's friends?"

His question caught me off guard. Jay's friends? Why does he care? As far as I know, the guy doesn't have anyone around here except Aidan.

"I only know Aidan... why?" I shot him a confused look.

Chase let out a heavy sigh and stared right into my eyes, dead serious, "I think Jacob... that Jacob... is Jay's friend. And he's possibly ten feet away from us right now."

I sat up straight, my stomach twisting. "No way. You're overthinking. There's no way he's back here. You know that."

It didn't make sense. It couldn't be real. Jacob coming back here? Back to this place that ruined him? No... no way. I refused to believe it no matter how convincing Chase sounded.
