The Mage Who Slays

"Warning. Several enemies with high hostility levels have been detected. Get ready for battle," said the voice, instantly helping me to armor up and giving me back my sword.

I tried to call for Verna but when I looked to my side, he wasn't there. My eyes then focused on the enemies, which were a bunch of animals turned into Husks. They didn't look too rotting or disgusting. But they weren't woodland creatures.

They were all apex predators of the animal kingdom. One bear charged towards me. I jumped from my spot and gripped onto a tree branch. But when I looked up, I realized I made a mistake and a jaguar was getting ready to turn me into dinner.

I released and hopped onto the bear's back. But because it was dark, the most I could do was stab and destroy his spine. I was being thrown off and could not tell which way I was going. A pair of arms caught me to prevent me from flying into the enemy's mouth.

"Not a very good fighter in the dark, eh?" asked Verna, with a raised eyebrow and grin.

I blushed and looked away. In my world, there is something called lamps to help. And we don't have to fight off zombified animals, just human drunkards.

"Don't worry. Just stay here and protect yourself. I'll deal with this bump in the road," boasted Verna, placing back onto my feet.

His Aura flared brilliantly and he prepared his scythes for battle. His eyes were glowing as he leaped straight into battle. Taking in a deep breath, he did an assortment of twists and turns. Though it was several movements, it felt like a fluid dance.

Each step was thought through and performed without any stops. He sliced through the enemies like they were paper. It all happened within a flash, my eyes could hardly comprehend how he'd managed to pull that off. And he did all without tumbling or slipping.

I was too stunned to say anything as I watched him perform in front of me. I've watched shows that pull these kinds of stunts of but it was usually very choppy or fake. But this... Was truly phenomenal. From a human standpoint, it wasn't impossible but it was very difficult to do so.

And these new Husks were faster and bigger than the ones I dealt with before. As I was gawking at him, I failed to see another tiger pouncing on me. And without breaking momentum, Verna threw one of his scythes right at its head while he was spinning in the air.

And did I mention that he was upside down? He then used the other scythe to take down the animal in front of him. I turned around just in time to block another attack from a jaguar. How many of these things are there?! I repelled it by pushing the sword abruptly.

Once it was forced to be in mid-air, I changed the grip on my sword and quickly sliced it downwards, cutting open its skull in a matter of seconds. Now I was at a disadvantage as I was still in the motion of slicing downwards. The next thing flew towards me at lightning speed.

Of all things... Why a falcon? I knew I couldn't dodge it without using Magecraft so I prepared a shield but Verna had other ideas for the poor bird. He wrapped one of the scythes around a tree branch and turned his weapons into a grappling hook.

Gripping on the other scythe, he pushed himself away from the tree by kicking the trunk. And with another turn in midair, he delivered a powerful kick to the pitiful falcon's head. I heard the sound of a skull being smashed! It was terrifying but cool.

I internally screamed as the kick was intense, causing the falcon's head to be destroyed into bits while it was still attached to the neck. Another bear stood in front of him, with its hind legs in the air. He then grinned and swung his weapons up in the air.

Holding onto the middle of the chain, Verna spun the twin scythes over his head. The way he was spinning it reminded me of a move in Kendama called 'Hurricane'. It's the same as what he was doing. Kicking upwind, the bear roared in retaliation and Verna threw his scythes towards it.

The twin blades coiled around the bear's neck. The Slayer then proceeded to leap into the air afterward, backflipping and landing on the bear's shoulders. He caught the twin blades and proceeded to stab the creature's skull before taking them out and landing on the grass floor.

Once again, this happened in under a few seconds. The bear tumbled onto the ground and his remains faded into the night, as so did the rest.
